1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

I'm so excited, I bought a 1964 Dodge 330 from eastern Canada, it is being transported across the country and should be here in a few days! This was a B/SA car with a 426 max wedge combo, however I would like to build a "Race Only 426 Hemi" combo. I am not a Mopar historian so I could use some advice. Do I have to use a aluminum hood and aluminum hemi scoop to be stock eliminator legal? All steel? Or can I use a steel hood with fiberglass hemi scoop? Who runs this combo? Tom Nolan

According to the NHRA Classification Guide you can run either steel or aluminum but you can't intermix them. If you run steel you can't use a hood scoop and unless you are running IHRA you can't use fiberglass components.

Good luck Tom, you did fine on the T-bolt , new project will cost you a bit more. The last Alum frontend I saw went for just over $20grand. Every thing else should be easy to find.
Have fun !

Glad to hear ''plan A'' for the Dodge. Hope all goes well in the conversion to a race Hemi car. Hope to see it in action soon.

Geeez Tom, now you will have a race car from each of the "Big Three"! Maybe a nice SS/C Hurst AMX would round out the collection!

I"ve been thinking I was a dumbass for putting mine back together and here you guy's come building brand new cars, I feel better now thanks guy's.

Are you planning on going with the single four or the crossram?

No fiberglass or plastics windows allowed. You can put the battery in the trunk though.

Bucky,
When do you expect to have the NASCAR Hemi on track?

FYI for all - '63 Plymouth aluminum fenders, bumper brackets, lower grill panel available all in good condition for $3,500. Pick up only. Mesa, AZ.
No, do not have the hood!

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

Wow, great to see a few of these cars going together! Inspired by Les Norton's old '65 Belvedere and Al Carp's Coronet I decided I'd turn my '65 Belvedere post into a stocker. Since I was going insane I decided to completely dive off of the cliff and put a stick in it.

I wish you all the best of luck with your builds and can't wait to see them in action. PLEASE post some build pictures, as will I in another thread.

Jeff,Maybe this year i have alot of irons in the fire. Jasons got new motor ready to dyno this week time to go testing again. i would like to build a 63 plymouth how nice is aluminum? i have a scoop.

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

The aluminum is nice although you probably know they needed work when new. I'm no expert on those cars but I can't think $3500 is a bad buy. It's the shipping that's a pain. Don't want it arriving like crumpled aluminum foil! PM me for his #.

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

I have pulled 250-300lbs of junk weight out of my old Dodge, huge factory bench seat, stock wiring, old race car wiring and misc other pieces that don't need to be there. I have cut some of the old roll bar out....new Chrome moly cage, and Kirkey seats will go back in shortly. All interior is being stripped including all glass. Who makes a quality reproduction interior kit? Front & rear door panels, weather striping kit, door sill's, headliner, screw kits ect ?

Dion Hildebrandt 04-17-2013 02:37 PM

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

check out AMK products for the screw kits, I like Soff seal for the weatherstrips, or Metro has good stuff too

JRyan 04-17-2013 02:39 PM

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

I can't help on the door panels. However, Kramer Automotive in PA has a lot of the weather stripping and many other pieces. They focus on 62 and later Mopars. I bought quite a bit from them when I was redoing my 63 Belvedere. They were always great too deal with.

Hey Tom, may want to check out Legendary Interiors for door panels, head liner etc.. http://www.legendaryautointeriors.co...0/catalog.html

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

Thanks for the interior info. I will get some stuff coming. Update: left rear leaf spring was broken on the trip across the country so I have new Calvert springs, U-bolts, Cal-Trac bars, and 9 way shocks are on there way! Car is booked in May for Chrome moly cage, seat mounting, weight bars & box. Glass shop is coming to remove front and rear glass early next week. Dash pad and all painted interior is going to paint shop to be repainted. I will post some photo's once I get the new cage, and rear suspension.

The first thing you need to do is start ordering the engine pieces if your using all new MOPAR parts. Probably to your surprise, the stuff seems to be constantly on back order.

Good advice, when you look up "backordered" in the dictionary there's a Mopar emblem there :p

I think you need to hire a driver for that stable of race cars.

I drive for cheap (free).

Good luck with the new project! If it is half as nice as your others, it will be stellar!

Jeff :)

64 B-body, you are now allowed to outfit a stocker with aftermarket race seats.

Dash @ autobody shop. Filled several drilled/screw holes from 49 years of gauges and tach's. Smoothed and sanded several shaker can paint jobs off. Paint tomorrow for dash and all interior trim pieces! Racer red! Should be better than new.

I ordered Schumacher motor mounts, installed them on the plastic block, slotted the mounts welded to the K member. However something is messed up.......block sits crooked? Any advice?

Do Not use the Schumacher Hemi to wedge conversion mount. They raise all kinds of hell with header clearance. Been there done that, Remember that one A-56? Infact Marks headers will not fit using that mount system. They are good to locate the engine placement, like Mark said the engine is skewed to the passenger side. There is a guy in Wisconson who makes the 64/65 Hemi K-members I was able to talk him into selling just the mounting brackets so I could weld up my K-member

So is there anything wrong with putting the engine in square? Once I get the headers up here I will bolt them to the mock up block and make the engine fit straight.....crank center-line in the center, lower maybe....valve covers should come on and off with out any clearance issues?
Legendary Interior just showed up today.......looks fantastic! Crimson red 330 Super-stock pattern. New door seals, and black headliner......oh ya!

I would not lower or relocate the engine. Why reinvent the wheel? Too much would be effected, not to mention illegal for stock eliminator. Think of how the engine off set works with a driver on the left side regarding balance.

Hemi project update.....stainless headers from Performance Welding were delivered by my good friend Rick Paton {thank goodness for friends that share the passion of cars and racing!} Mark from Performance Welding is a artist, these headers a beautiful! I couldn't help myself I took them out of the box and installed them on my mook up block in the car. Only took about 20 minutes. All I need now is a empty BBM 727 and I can bolt it all together to fabricate some motor mounts. Still waiting for a spot to open up at the chassis shop to install the cage......soon I hope.

Tom Nolan 09-18-2013 06:00 PM

Re: 1964 Dodge 330 "Race Hemi"

What does everyone use on the 727 trans for a polyurethane mount? It looks like the mount that came with my car has been modified to be solid. Now I know from the past experiences that solid = cracked trans case. I cant seem to find any photo's of how they originally were. So any wisdom will help.
