Super Stock Eliminator Final

Ronnie Sox (1967 Plymouth Belvedere II w/GTX Lettering) = SS/B
vs.
Dick Arons (1967 Camaro SS396) = SS/EA

Ronnie was running his new 1967 #RO23 426 Street Hemi.
The SS/B Class Record was 11.63 at the time.
Sox & Martin had purchased their car from Gate City Motor Company (Greensboro, North Carolina) in May of 1967.

Dick Arons was running his Maroon 1967 Camaro Coupe with the 396/325 HP.
A very light car at #3217 lbs.
The SS/EA Class Record was 12.38

In the Final, Dick Arons ran an unbelievable 11.63 to Ronnie Sox's phenomenal 11.02

Re: 1967 Super Stock Nationals

Rico,

I don't think Ron Mancini was at the 1967 Super Stock Nationals with
the 1963 Plymouth Max-Wedge 'Aluminum-Nose' SS/BA car.

Arlen Vanke had a 1963 Plymouth Savoy Max-Wedge 'Steel-Nose'
non Ram-Air car that ran in SS/CA.

It may have had an aluminum front bumper on the car at the time.

The 1963 Plymouth Savoy 'Steel-Nose' 426/425 HP Super Stock weighed in at #3328 lbs. ~ 425 HP = 7.83 Wt/Hp

They were a perfect fit for SS/CA in 1967.

Re: 1967 Super Stock Nationals

J-T,

Tommy Clise was out of Lonaconing, Maryland.

In 1966 {NHRA} he was running a 1965 Plymouth Satellite 383/330 HP in D/SA {10.60 to 11.29 Wt/Hp}.

In 1966 {NASCAR} he was running in C/SA {10.60 to 11.29 Wt//Hp}

The Plymouth ran 13.20's @ 106 MPH and was a 'solid' runner, as he was tearing up Middle Stock Eliminator.

At the 1967 Super Stock Nationals, he was competing in SS/DA {8.70 to 9.49 Wt/Hp}.

I believe he switched over to a lighter car, and ran a
1964 Belvedere with a 426/365 HP 'Street Wedge'

He won Class........ :)

Some cool Ford Fairlanes were in attendance as well.

1) Wally Lynn and Nate Cohen
2) Ed Skelton
3) Ryan and Downing
4) Harold Dutton
5) Hubert Platt

Dutton went to the Semi's when Lynn red lighted, but lost to Dick Arons. Hubert had mechanical problems.

Is there a list somewhere of the surviving 427 light weight Fairlanes? I believe Rich Lorenze from Brazil Indiana had one. I drive through that town once a month and Lorenze Auto Repair is still there. I'm going to stop one day and see if they have any photos around that I can scan if no one else has any.

There is a 'list' somewhere on the web.

1966 Fairlane 500 'Hardtop' ~ 'R-Code' 427/425 HP ~ FE Medium Riser ~ Dual-Quad 8V ~ Side-Oiler ~ 4-Speed

Production ...... 57

Only '2' built with the 'Heater' delete option.

How many 1966 Fairlane 'Sedan' Post Cars ?

* 1966 ........ A/S ... {7.00 to 8.69 Wt/Hp}
* 1967 ...... SS/B ...{7.00 to 7.79 Wt/Hp}
* 1968 ...... SS/C .. {7.00 to 7.79 Wt/Hp}

I am guessing this is the Jerry Harvey Fairlane, but not sure if the paintwork is correct for the 67 Super Stock Nationals. I did not know this car or the Ireland car were in attendance. I learned something today! I guess the '66 cars were rated at less weight to run in SS/B over the '67 Fairlanes?

Tommy D,

Here's a 1966 running in SS/BA at Dover Drag Strip in 1967.

Richie Marcy bought his new, as a 4-Speed. But, he couldn't stop
missing shifts, and blew the 427 Wedge up 'three times'.

They brought it back to the Ford Dealership {Carmel Ford, New York}
and they swapped in a Fairbanks C-6.

That did the 'trick'.

Dick Arons also won the 1968 SS Nationals with a 67 Camaro Convertible 396/325 in SS/F. Incredible feat to win this race two years in a row. Once with an automatic and once with a stick!

Egbert,

1967 NHRA Super Stock Classes

SS/A .... 0.00 to 6.99
SS/B .... 7.00 to 7.69
SS/C .... 7.70 to 8.69

The 1966 and 1967 Fairlane's with the 427/410 HP ~ 4-Barrel
fell into SS/C.

They could 'not' qualify for A/Stock {8.70 to 9.49 Wt/HP} in 1967.

But, early in the 1967 NHRA Season, the AA/S Class {7.70 to 8.69 Wt/HP} was still going, and that is where they could run.

But, by the 1967 Springnationals, the AA/S Class was
disbanded by the NHRA.

Whoa,

I have photo's of Hubert running in 'SS/C' in 1967 with the
1967 Ford Fairlane 500 'Georgia Shaker' sponsored by Paul Harvey Ford.

Shoe-polished on the Windshield at the 1967 NHRA Winternationals.

How can this be ............

As you can see here, Hubert is campaigning the 1967 Fairlane 500, which was
heavier than the 1966 cars.

When you enlarge the picture of Bill Ireland's car there is something attached to the front of the hood.

Re: 1967 Super Stock Nationals

Hubert did not campaign the car at the 67 Winternationals. The car was ran at the 68 Winternationals and was dropped a class down to SS/C.

Here you can clearly see the car ran SS/B at the Super Stock Nationals. Notice the line scraped through the lettering breaking up the "B". Though, if you peer through the glass and onto the windshield you can clearly see the reversed "B" on the glass.

Joel also took this photo at the same event and you can see what I'm talking about in the above paragraph.

That would be correct.

In 1968 at the NHRA Winternationals,

Hubert Platt was running in SS/C with the 1967 Fairlane 500.

Here he is going for the SS/C Class Trophy against Bill 'Grumpy' Jenkins in his 1967 Camaro SS-396.

Note: In 1968, the Paul Harvey sponsored 1967 Fairlane 500 had a slightly different
lettering scheme.

Photo didn't pull up Paul.

Platt sold the car right after the 68 WN's. The car actually changed to the Two-tone paint job around September of 67. I have the story from the guy who bought it.

Re: 1967 Super Stock Nationals

Old Thread, new question:

I am looking at the Sep.1967 class records sheet from National Dragster.
It shows Tommy Clise as SS/DA=8.70 record at 114.3mph, 62 Plymouth.

I am trying to figure out what car this is!
I gather that right after that he switched to a 65 426/365 car.
But it says 62 Plymouth here and in Davis' SS book pg185. I cant find anything close to w/p=8.70 except:
62 Fury 3seat wagon 3559/410hp = 8.68
would NHRA let that slide as 8.70?

Or
62 Savoy 2d sdn 3159/343hp = 9.21
This fits but seems a waste in the 8.70 weight class.

Anybody know what car/engine the Clise 62 Plymouth was??

Related question -
On pg 181 of Larry Davis' Super Stock book, he says the new 440 DUAL QUAD Mopar could run in SS/E.
I have to read the NHRA rule book pretty loosely to come up with dual quads being legal, or were there a bunch of factory 440-8v cars I missed?
I read somewhere about the z28 running dual quads too in SS, so maybe it is a general question - when were non-factory dual quads legal in SS ? (I know the 383/343 is a special case!)

Thanks for any memories of these details!

Not aware of Mopar ever building a 440 dual quad motor Deuce.

440 6 Pack or 440 single 4BBL.

99% certain only the Hemis , Sonoramics, early 383/413s and MW motors came with duals in the 60s

Re: 1967 Super Stock Nationals

Thanks Rat
In the years in between I've concluded the same, the 440-dual-quad was a mixup or typo or something.

It was a little iffy since NHRA DID legalize the 1962 383/343-8v inline / tandem dual quad even though AFAIK none ever left the assembly line (at least not under the hood). That combo had a lot of wins in Stock/Auto classes.

On the "1962" Clise car I've concluded that it was a 63 wagon 426/415 max wedge, W/P=8.78, a very good fit to the 8.70 class.

Having gone thru a lot more of these sheets, I've concluded the car year is USUALLY right, but not always, even if it's given and legible.

Whoever writes the captions, if he doesn't know ,(he usually doesn't) he just makes it up!
