Hydraulic Rollers
Who makes the lowest "plunge" hydraulic roller, or is that the result area
to be looking at? J.R. |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
We have run several Hydraulic roller cam engines, Ford and Chevrolet using production lifters with no issues. Keep in mind they are relatively low lift Crate motor stock cams. Maybe WE are missing out on some performance but never any problems. Louis Jeffery

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Hi Lou, thanks for the reply. I'm not having any problem with mine, it is that when I checked them, they drop 145 thousands, and to be legal
I can run one's that only drop 30 thou. Sounds like leaving a lot on the table to me. J.R. |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
When they are running, they wont drop any. You are just measuring the total range that is built into the lifter plunger.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
SS3011, interesting. I am trying to learn about hydraulic rollers as I have never run them before. It's interesting the different opinions you can get.
I have had 2 people(1 Racer, 1 Manufacturer) tell me they have back to backed cars at the track, changing oil from 5/20 to 20/50 to keep the lifters "up", and both picked up .03-.04. Keep in mind they also had to overcome the difference in the oil. True story? Who the hell knows. I'm just trying to buy the right stuff once, instead of twice. J.R. |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
JR, It isn't very hard to restrict the travel in a hyd. lifter, once you get one apart.
Just have to use good grade, consistent thickness washers. (aviation grade or similar), once you figure out what you need. Then you won't have to worry about it. |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Thanks Mark. That's what I was looking for! J.R.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Sherman's used to do roller lifters for stockers, I do not the number now.
|
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Allen Sherman told me his Dad still does the hydraulic roller lifters, E-mail, shermanracing@bellsouth.net, or call (225) 473-4923, (225) 717-1460, (225) 717-1461

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
You might want to check out Morel lifters. A variety of hydraulic roller lifters.
|
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Anyone have a link to Morel? Search engine comes up with nothing here.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
There are Morels that are legal. J.R.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
JR,
I hope you check with NHRA Tech guy on Morel's being legal ??? |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
What could possibly constitute an illegal lifter as long as it has some travel? They do check lift with a solid, right?

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Nobody's posted in this thread for a while. But I was wondering if anybody knows what the difference is between the Comp Cams 875-16 reduced travel Hyd roller lifter and the Comp Cams 15850-16 short travel Hyd roller lifter? If you read the descriptions they are the same and fit the same engines. Except that one is 10 grams heavier, .06 difference in seat height and twice the price. There has got to be more to it than that but their site does not say what it is. Too late to call Comp tonight but I was wondering if anybody on here knows.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Interesting as Im working on getting all the pieces for a 307 oldsmobile motor and looking into what roller hydraulic to use. Im sure Im staying with the small diameter .842 unless someone has better ideas of want would work cheaper and easier.

Re: Hydraulic Rollers
I had Bullet hydraulic roller lifters in my LT-1 stocker. They had about .015" travel as I recall. They may have been made by Morell, I don't know, but had Bullet etched on them. They were about the same cost as std solid rollers out there today. Woodro Josey sold me those along with numerous other parts on that engine build....
They were excellent parts and trouble free to any rpm.... |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
JMRACING
Go with Comp Cams # 15850-16the best one for the price |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
I sent Chris at Comp a email and did not expect to hear back till tomorrow but he was able to get back to me tonight.
For those interested here is what he said about the 2 different lifters. For a race engine the 15850-16 is best for a race application because it only has .030" of travel and it can take over 500#'s of open spring pressure. The 875-16 has about .100" of travel and can take 400#'s open pressure. |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
Jeff,
You can only run your '88 as a 138 HP engine with the .921" lifters. I'm sure there is great deal of latitude taken with the "Aftermarket OEM-type lifters permitted" statement by those who like to stretch the rules, but I was told when building our 138 HP Cutlass Stocker, that I had to use the "big" lifter, so we did. Fortunately, they're able to be shimmed for limited travel, and unfortunately, they're heavy and require the 138HP roller block. Jerry |
Re: Hydraulic Rollers
When checking the NHRA engine specs for the 1987, 307/138 olds I see that the diameter for these roller lifters is .698".
Is there an advantage to the smaller diameter lifter? I would think that that the larger diameter would be more stable in the bore at higher RPM. The smaller diameter would be lighter. Is the diameter a factor in choosing the better lifter for stock eliminator? |
