Plane crash at Pomona Raceway

While watching the evening news a moment ago, they broadcast a story about a small plane crashing on the eastern perimeter of Brackett Field. Seems that it struck and damaged the right lane finish line scoreboard at the drag strip, made it across Fairplex Drive, struck the fence and caught fire. Pilot escaped with only minor injuries. Glad it didn't happen a week ago. Glad nobody was injured.

Hope pilot pulls through. Hey Greg do you think they will fill in the pot holes so I dont cut down another new slick in Feb. :(

Where were the potholes? In the pits or out on the track someplace? I remember when Pomona had the roughest shutdown area out there.

Several years ago, a 767 wide body got glided in on the dragstrip at Gimli Manitoba. It had run out of fuel and the pilot dead sticked it in. It was successfully emergency landed, they fixed it and flew it back out after repairs.

It hit the right lane score board and that may have been what saved him to scrub off speed. He's a lucky SOB!!

60 seconds on the clock to explain a round lose when this happens, just for fun !

Did he pass fuel check?

I don't think they could get close enough with a sample cup because of the big fireball. Would burning fuel test out OK?

Seriously, that was one fortunate incident,if one of these could be called that.He just missed the finish line grandstands, going around the end of it, since the scoreboard is way lower than the top of the grandstand, and he could have been trapped under the grandstand if he would have not gotten around the south end of it. That part of the track is under the landing approach of Brackett Field. Just be glad it wasn't Thursday a week early. Imagine the headline "Sportsman Qualifying Cancelled due to Plane Crash".

The gimli Manitoba crash was because they filled the aircraft in litres instead of gallons. This was during the switch over to metric and should of been picked up when the pilot did the drip test but he didn't do one. Long story short, he ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing on the only strip of pavement he could find.

More proof that drag strips save lives ! LOL!

Really Greg? You're such a buzz kill with that one.
Thousands of landings for decades over the same flight path and the stands are no longer there BTW. Yeah, I'm glad he survived as well. Huh.

Now------------, your history memory should note that the FAA actuality forced the scoreboards to be lowered some years ago as well. OMG, they knew this would happen ????

What is a buzz kill? Is that like a wardrobe malfunction, but only when getting a hair cut?

Re: Plane crash at Pomona Raceway

The 2011 crash was east of the pits at the horse oval beside them. The latest guy is pretty lucky to get out, plane looked mangled.
The Gimli crash was during a road race, they used the drag strip as the main straight and cars were lined up to start the race when it came in. Lots of witnesses!
The pilot was familiar with the WW2 airbases and knew where he could find a place to land rather a visual sighting of it first. Google "Gimli Glider" and there are several stories of that.

Probably the wildest recent one was in Iceland during a drag race...
