Where did the FWD stockers go?
I had a lot of time to kill today and was looking in the Drag Race Central archives. The earliest info started at 1998. I was looking at the qualifying and class winners in stock eliminator specifically the front wheel drive cars. I always enjoyed watching the FWD cars as well as lower classed cars. It seems now there are not a lot of FWD cars left. Some of the FWD cars I saw entered at Indy since 1998 were: Rivera's, Aries wagons, Sundance's, Delta's, Charger's, Escort's, Citation's, Cavalier's. Sunbird's, PT Cruisers, Neon's, and Omni's. I remember my first trip to Indy 15 or so years ago I saw a Dodge Omni driving to the track with decals and NHRA number on the window and a tag on the rear. The coolest has to be Art's mini van. Does anyone have any info or stories about these cars? I sure hope they are still around and didn't get crushed and turned into beer cans.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
My Riviera went to North Carolina, my Lynx went to Illinois, my Escort went to Michigan, and my Omni went to California. I think that's all I had.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
There are still some of use out there also the mini van was Bill Howell not Arts

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Jim Wahl races H/SA, Mark Poole races F/SA, Mark Yacavone helped build a Dfs with Alex Kadar, Bill O Conner still going strong after all these years....and of course that Gary Hampton guy races Dfs also. In D3 Ron Seibenick has at least 2 FWD in competition and Steve Pothole parked his FWD when he went Competition Elminator racing. Of course my favorite of all time was Brian Olsons Ford Escort.....Escort Service....

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
How many FWD combos never were built because they aren't even in the Classification Guide? Ford, for example, has had no legal FWD cars since the 1997 model year (meaning both weight and engine specs). Dodge and Chrysler have nothing since 2004, not even the Dart used in Pro Stock. Chevrolet is the most recent, with the 2008 Cobalt, and that is already eight years old.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Mr. Jackson, do you have something against beer cans? I haven't hoisted one recently, but I think they're made from aluminum. Jeff T. would know probably.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
I sold my Charger to Neil Smedley. Angelo Phillips sold his Charger to Stan Kopetka in Div 5. He Still races it. Mine I do do believe is parked for ?....

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Even more rare the FWD Super Stockers! I think I'm the only one left remotely active (Neon). Art Leong has his car (Neon) for sale, Ron Seibenick (Calais) has one that he's only had out a couple times in the last few years, Carl Mosier also had one a few years ago (Sunfire) that he ran IHRA and that's all I'm aware of in the last 5+ years.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
I still have my DF/S Turismo, although it's been resting in Billy Nees's shop for several years. It's for sale. http://classracer.com/classforum/showthread.php?t=34200

I have a few more for this thread: 1. Larry Dowty raced a Pontiac Grand Am in Super Stock, but I think it's either sold, or for sale. 2. Randy Hyman raced a Citation Stocker, but sold it and has been racing a Chevy Truck for about 2yrs. 3. Stan Kopejtka, also has/had an Aries Stocker. 4. I don't remember the guys name, but I faced (and got dusted by) a Dodge Daytona Turbo, back in the early 2000's when my combo was factored too hard (B&CF/SA). That car was street legal, and had Colorado plates on it to prove it. 5. Gary Gokey has his turbo Dodge Omni still, and he might bring it back out of storage, but I am not sure? 6. Lisa Stephenson has her Olds Delta 88 Stocker, but I think it's for sale too.... |

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Gary last year at the Mission Raceway points meet, I made it to the 3rd round in my DF/S wagon and I was running more than a tenth over my index. And no one red lit against me.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
It completely slipped my mind that I have a dog in this fight. I ran a bone-stock 1982 Dodge Aries sedan in Y/SA as a one-shot deal at the 1982 NHRA WCS points race at Englishtown. The car ran at least a second over the index and I went out against Dave LeBrun in round one. I believe the car was pictured in the July 1982 issue of SS&DI.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Don't forget the Cadillac I ran for 18 years and held The AF/SA ,BF/SA, CF/SA, and DF/SA records for years! Qualified #1 at Indy until the last Q session in 1989 I believe and won class at Indy in '89 and '90 against those tough under factored Oldsmobiles! The Caddy is parked in TN. and the Spirit that I got from Artie was sold right after I bought the Volare' from George Wieduch and was completely redone but has been parked for several years. That car is still deadly. Both the Caddy and the Spirit were Giant Killers, just ask Bob Reed. I still have my SRT4 Neon and could be raced tomorrow if I wanted to. Had lots of fun times with those "little boy cars"! And that's what its about, right? Jim

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
If my memory is correct the Stephenson family FWD was the former Tom Kasch car. Appropriately named The GIANT KILLER it was driven by numerous family members and one Kyle Riley. The car was sold a few years ago and the last that I heard was it has been sitting with a broken trans...Of course only 1 racer has won a National Event in a FWD and that racer is......Our very own race promoter/ torque converter technician Mark "teddy" Yacavone.

Thanks to an eBay seller, I was able to obtain a picture of the page in SS&DI. This car probably predates any other FWD car mentioned in this thread. |
Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
I have to have more runs in a FWD car than anyone, maybe 900.

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Thanks for the responses. I have always been curious about the cars. I assumed the transmissions would be the weak link although I don't remember ever seeing one break. Between Chrysler, ford, and GM who has the strongest FWD transmissions both auto and stick? Thanks, Don Jackson

Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
Going to jump into this FWD scene this year with both feet! Have a good car, just need to figure out how to drive it! Quite a bit different than leaving on the bumper in the wagon. It seems that a 14 second stocker is way harder to drive than the super stock car. Looking forward to some warm weather testing, -37 degrees last night with wind chill. Getting old fast!!

Where have all the Quad4 Calais's gone . That was a great combination !
|
Re: Where did the FWD stockers go?
I still have the Achieva and Calais . Running the Achieva with a SOHC head at this time. Have a Super Stock Quad 4 engine on the engine stand, waiting for time on the dyno before putting it in the Calais.
