Great Race LO23 Dart
1 Attachment(s)
Our last project, I promise. LOL To celebrate its 50th anniversary, this car will attempt to rally across America in the June 2018 Great Race. That's 2500 plus miles in 9 days of summer heat. Currently in original form with some serious dry rotted tires, we will upgrade to analog gauges, auxiliary cooling fan and a Passion overdrive for the hemi 4 speed and 4.56 dana. It has a fresh motor but the race cam may have to come out. We are missing the "blue box" transignitor if anyone has a lead where we can get one. More pics as we move along.

Past tense? So it does not work? Thanks |
Re: Great Race LO23 Dart
Your a brave man doing that kind of mileage in one of these things in summer.
I'm done in mine after 20 miles. LOL I know Steve Atwell took his 4 spd LO23 through Drag week a fewe years ago. Its a thrash for sure.... liteweight |
Re: Great Race LO23 Dart
COOL ...... well, until the trip starts.
Then it will be "sweaty cool". :) . |
Re: Great Race LO23 Dart
We definitely will have some challenges. Will have to "park" C10 fuel along the route like the Iditarod dog sled guys. We know the lunch and overnight stops only, not the exact route until 30 minutes before start. Also upgrades to cooling and electrical systems without altering the car. We use magnetic wire loom which has some badazz magnets. I hope to get the car down this weekend, gets some before pics and start a punch list. The good news is I am navigator and my ole' Nam F4 pilot brother-in-law has to wheel this beast. He ain't gonna' like me after this one....Phish

Here are a few pics. Not going to be much work at all. Needs tires, one high beam out, fresh wiper blades and some black lap belts. Window slides and door locks functional but no horn. Not sure if these even came with a horn. There is a wire plug in the horn area so test light check when I have some help. The master cylinder is new but I have the old one in a box. Undercarriage is spotless so I hope it doesn't rain.....

Thank you Al Gore for inventing the internet. And thanks to those who responded to the need of the infamous Prestolite blue box. I scored a complete system in the original box for slightly more dollars than 1968 prices. LOL But we have it.

Yes, cooling and brake upgrades are allowed without penalty. Since this car is young compared to a 1914 American Lafrance type car, we only get a 2% multiplier versus their 50% break on time error. But the motto is "to finish is to win". Our goal is to terrorize the teams/fans and to finish without wrecking the thing. Looks like Mopar Media and some mags or going to cover this crazy idea. Too bad we have no back seat, they could ride along. LOL |
Re: Great Race LO23 Dart
Phish…Great Project. Looking forward to following "The Journey". I'm glad to see, I'm not the only one who puts the newly arrived parts on the dining room table. MB

Still on Great Race recovery but the FBI Hemi Coronet was a big hit with the crowds and the racers. Ran perfect for the whole 2400 miles. I tried to sell it for a year (cheap) and now had to show a "Not For Sale" sign during the race. Guess you had to see the highend parts on it in person to believe it. Now its the LO23 Darts turn. Going to get some value out of it by running it like it is stolen! LOL Alamo to the Carolinas. We learned enough on gearing and hemi survival to pull it off. Get started in a few months. Phish

This thing is just TOO BIG. If we miss a turn, we would have to find a Walmart or truck stop to turn around. Maybe one day.
