Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Tom,
Funny you just posted these pic's. The first one was Bob Glidden's car that Brandon & Turnage bought and made it the Nitro 9 car. Then my uncle Jeff Velde bought it in '75. I grew up with that car. We lost track of it in the late 80's. Then low and behold, I was selling a car at Mecum Kissimmee last weekend and it was parked a couple row's over painted in the Ed Martin Ford livery. It sold for $87,000. As far as the second car I don't know. But the third is Carl Holbrook's car. My uncle introduced me to him at the '79 or '80 Gatornationals and Carl had that car then while my uncle had the Nitro 9 car so they aren't the same car. All I know for now, great memories!!! Our picture of Jeff Velde SS-f Mustang.
http://www.imagebam.com/image/955207526951965 A guy called me this morning and asked me what I knew about this Mustang. He had been researching it, and said Jeff told him after he bought it a guy offered him BIG money for it. So he built a clone , painted it red ,etc. That was the car sold at the auction this weekend NOT the original car , the guy who bought it from Jeff still has it. That was what I was told. |
Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Tom,
Hate to tell you, but the car at the auction was my uncle's car. I knew every inch of that car and it was my uncle's car. My uncle sold the car to one of our mechanics back at our dealership in Illinois around '82. He raced the car for a couple years and sold to some bracket racers out of Tennessee and they raced it until the late '80's and we lost track. My uncle was building another one identical to the Nitro 9 car when he decided to sell both of them and go Comp racing with a Pinto that was also one of Glidden's cars. The second car is probably the car the guy still has. Hope that helps. Bret Velde 2003 SS/LA |
Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
For what ever reason, I can't access Class racer and post comments. He is right. The car that went to Mecum was Jeff Velde's car. My argument is that Velde's car was NOT Gliddens old car. Turnage told me he sold Gliddens old car to Steve Retton and then built another car that eventually became Jeff Velde's car. We raced against both cars when I was with Davis. Turnage ran the second car in SS/E for a short time and we had to run him ( The second car ) for class. The next weekend, we were running Steve Retton at PID with Gliddens old car... Give anyone my phone number and have them call me. 330-692-3785... I welcome any conversations on this issue...

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
This is the story that I got from multiple and recent telephone conversations with Gene Turnage. Gene told me that Steve Retton from Fairmont, WV offered them a lot of money for the car he and Clyde Brandon were racing at the time. They sold the car to Retton. That car was Glidden's old car. They immediately built a second car with tubs and a ladder bar with slider suspention and painted it the same as the first Glidden car. Red and Nitro 9 on the side. That was the car that went to Velde. It was not Gliddens car according to Turnage. We were racing Turnage for class one weekend in the second car, then racing Retton at PID the next weekend in the first car. Turnage told me that he raced Retton for clas at Englishtown in 1974. Two red 68 Mustangs with Nitro 9 on the side. Turnage beat Retton and Retton got pissed and said, " If I knew you were going to build another one, I wouldn't have bought the first one ". This is all from a recent phone conversation with Gene Turnage...

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Great to hear these stories before my uncle had it. Awesome car, that car gave me the drag racing disease I have today LOL. Wonder what happen to the second car my uncle was finishing, it was a roller ready to go, even the same red color? I think I remember him saying that Brandon & Turnage found it up in a yard in Tennessee or Georgia.

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
There has always been a lot of confusion about that simply because Brandon and Turnage had two 68 CJ Mustang super stock cars in a short period of time. Both painted red and both with Nitro 9 on the side...

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
I think we have some pic's when my uncle got it from Brandon & Turnage with "the Bob Glidden race cars" painted on top the front fenders.

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
You probably do, Turnage knew Glidden for a long time. Turnage told me that Steve Retton talked Glidden into freshening up a motor for him. This was at a time when Glidden was getting big and probably not doing much customer work...

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Bowlzee,
Have any idea where my uncle's roller went, I remember him showing me the four link in it and explaining to me how new that was for a Superstocker, sold it around '81 or '82?? Bret Velde 2003 SS/LA |
Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Maybe you can find out from Mecum who the high bidder was...

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Bowlzeee,
I didn't mean my uncle's car that sold at Mecum, I was wondering the story and where about's of Retton's car. Thanks! Bret Velde 2003 SS/LA |
Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
Bob Glidden was at the Suffolk points meet in April 1970 driving the Bob Frensley Ford Mustang. He came in with a Bob Frensley Ford tilt cab semi car carrier that also had a Pro Stock Maverick on it but he did not race it. He had black eyes and said he had been in an accident with the Maverick. He raced SS/FA at Suffolk but right after that changed to SS/F after I set the record in SS/FA.

Re: Bob Glidden Mustangs
The original Nitro 9 car that Brandon and Turnage had was the Glidden car, for sure. The second one was built in Nashville by Fred McMurtry IIRC......the second car was the one that Jeff Velde bought and raced. The first car changed hands a few times after Clyde and Gene sold it. Carl Holbrook did eventually end up with the Glidden car, which he eventually sold in '79 or thereabouts. I was a kid in the seventies.....I remember going to McMurtry's place with my dad when the car Jeff bought was being built. Brandon had referred my dad there to have work done on our '68 Mustang. Absolutely true that there were two......there was also a third car that I don't think they ever ran, but Gene Turnage is the best source of that info.
