Window Tint?
Anybody ever find something that will make 27 year old window tint loosen up? I've been using ammonia and a razor blade, there's got to be a better way.

Re: Window Tint?
use a fabric steamer or an old fashioned hair dryer to apply heat to the film then keep the heat on the area you are removing --you have to get the film warm so that it will release from the adhesive --when finished use goo gone or similar product to remove the adhesive residue--- takes time but it works---FED 387

Re: Window Tint?
Just scrape it when dry with a razor blade in a holder. Then use Sprayway surface cleaner foam or similar. Use the scraper again. That glue was water based at one time . Might take a couple shots at it .

Re: Window Tint?
I finally got the side windows clean. I threw every chemical I could think of at it and nothing worked. I scraped it with a razor blade and cleaned it with ammonia. The big challenge will be the monster back glass. This is my gen3 Camaro I'm working on.

Re: Window Tint?
I went down this road about 20 years ago with my Mustang. The amount of work may not justify the cost of replacement lighter glass. I just remember using a heat gun and razor blade.
Good luck! Sean |
Re: Window Tint?
Heat doesn't help at all . It just makes it gooey-er and hard to work. You won't hurt the glass with a razor blade. Bend the blade and grab it with a small vise-grip for concave surfaces, or use half the blade , then the other.
The glass opens and comes off on those, right? |
Re: Window Tint?
Maybe it depends on how long the tint has been on, but my experiance on my old 69 Fairlane Cobra mirrored what Mark said. I just used some new sharp razor blades, and the tint came off fairly easily, in large sections. Did not use any heat source. With many later car back glasses, you need to be very carefull around any electric rear defogger lines, very easy to damage or destroy, if that is a concern.

Re: Window Tint?
a friend of mine that tints. says to soak in zep mixed with 50/50 with water and cover with trashbags for 20-30 minutes and it should come off easy said to repeat for glue but also mentioned zep is strong and can ruin door panels and carpet if your not careful, wear gloves and make sure car doors are open

Re: Window Tint?
Thanks for all the info. I had all the glass out and on a table. Both side are done and reassembled now. Moving on to the back glass which has defroster lines in it. Not sure they're going to be there when I get done.

Re: Window Tint?
I'd be the guy who took the car to the professional refinishers and told them to do whatever they wanted with it. I can't afford to drive an extra day without glass :)

Re: Window Tint?
Sorry to bring up this old topic again, but I would like to say that dealing with old window tinting can be tricky. Instead of using ammonia and a razor blade, you can use a steam cleaner or heat gun to gently heat the tint. This will help loosen it without causing harm. Another option is a spray tint remover or an adhesive remover specifically designed for this purpose. A few months ago, this was the way I removed my tint and started using the sunblinds I ordered from snapshades.com, as they are more convenient for me. Just remember to follow the instructions carefully. Patience and the right tools will help you remove the old tint without any problems.
