I have owned a weapon since I was 11 years old. I took the NRA safety course in the Boy Scouts at 12. At 14 I shot my first deer and continued to hunt rabbit and quail until I went in the service. While in the Marines I fired competitively in two Division matches in Okinawa and Camp Pendleton received 16 Expert badges during time in service. I think I can consider myself a responsible gun owner. Here is what I believe about the 2nd Amendment: Everybody has a right to own a weapon but not everybody should have one without a thorough background check this includes removing HIPAA protection for mental health issues. I have weapons now and they service one purpose and that is the protection of my family and my property.

Billy, I am open for suggestions on how to stop school and church shootings. The killing of innocents does not sit well with me.

Nor with me Eddie. I would always be open to psychiatric evaluations on a case-by-case basis but whose cases and what cases and who gets to decide? And what about all of the inner-city killings that go on every day with non-legal guns?
Maybe it's time to reopen all of the psychiatric hospitals that the Carters closed and maybe it's time to take another look at the death penalty.
I've always been a proponent of the death penalty in an eye-for-an-eye kinda way. I'm going to hell for the things I've done in my life anyway.

I am not going to get into the politics on who did what to what. If you have notes in your health records of mental health issues identified by a professional clinical mental health specialist then you should been denied access to a weapon. With regards to the death penalty, no disagreement there but, keep in mind it has never been deterrent to future crimes. Maybe if the method was so horrific and public the results might be different but I doubt it.

Dead criminals do not reoffend, sounds like a deterrent to me!

For one person!, the one that committed the act.

18th century French philosopher Cesare Beccaria wrote a great piece “On Crimes and Punishment”, I remember it because one of my professors told us about being selected by the Kentucky governor to serve on a penal reform commission based solely on him parroting different themes proposed by Beccaria. Our criminal justice system is so flawed it’s pathetic. One of the things set forth by Beccaria was that crime is not deterred by the severity of punishment but rather its certainty. Compare that to the “catch and release” mindset so common today.

How can we stop the murder of our children!

"Have you EVER been diagnosed by a physician or other health professional (for example, a psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, or nurse practitioner) with psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, bipolar mood disorder, borderline personality disorder, or antisocial personality disorder?"

Now this question is asked on the SF86 National Security Check, why not on a Background check to buy a weapon. With 37 years working for the government and the majority of the time I held a TS clearance with CNWDI access. I have no problem being put under a microscope to have access to anything.

Quit blaming the gun and start blaming the person. I have been around and shot guns several times in my life. I have NEVER aimed a gun at person, empty or loaded.

You missed something, never blamed guns. My point is to deny individuals with identified mental illness access to weapons.

Eddie, I totally agree that there are people with issues that should not have guns. When someone is shot and killed, the media blames the gun and not the person.

Yet, if a murderous religious fanatic, crashes a jet aircraft into a building, drives a truck into a crowd of innocent citizens, or cuts the heads off people that they abducted, the blame is on the person, not the vehicle, weapon, or the group they are representing. Weird huh?

We are ALL in the same boat!!
1John 1:9 says" if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." What more can we ask for?
