72 mustang question

I have a 72 Mustang Fastback. It's a Q code Cobra Jet car but the 351 is toast.I have a 302 and C4 that I could put in the car. what class would it run in? Would it be good to build this car?

Re: 72 mustang question

That probably isn't going to work. The 302 is a 2BBL NHRA rated at 143 HP. The weight break is 21.43 lb/HP but that will put you in U/SA at the 20 lb/HP category. In order to make the lower end of the class you would have to weigh 3030 lbs. It would be very hard to get a 72 Fastback that light.

It is interesting that the 302 had its HP refactored in August 2013. I don't know what it was previously or why it was changed. It was probably a competitor request to lower the HP, but maybe someone is actually running that combo. I have never seen one.

Keep in mind that there is virtually no difference between the 71 and 72 so you could run it as a 71 Fastback or Mach1 and look at those engine combinations too.

If you want to run it as a '71 429CJ/SCJ, let me know. I have everything you need.....

Sooner, I'll throw my hat in the Cleveland ring, except it's not "under" yet & it's the 2bbl. version. Since Youngblood went to the dark side, I can't think of any other 351C's up here in D6. Are the 2 you speak of in D7 ?

So what exactly is the definition of "toast"? Is it completely blown up, like a rod through the block or does it just need a full rebuild? Does it have the correct heads, intake and carb?

Re: 72 mustang question

Might be a little over stated. The car sat for 15 years before I got it. It's .030 over and 2 of the cyl's were rusted tight. I had to gently beat the pistons out. LOL. It might clean up O/S but not sure yet. Heads , intake, and carb are all 72. It's also a 2 bolt main block.
Looks like the reason it was parked is 2 of the cam lobes are round...LOL

Well take that pup over to the machine shop and find out if it can be saved. Not all of the E and F cars on the west coast are super fast.Plus you don't have to have a aluminum intake you can still use a square bore intake and QF holley it will just be heavy.

There is also the D1ZE-BB intake that can be used with the Motorcraft spreadbore. It measure's big. I ran one in bracket's & it did OK but not sure how it would work on a stocker.
