Pentonix..Hallelujah

The best song ever, playing at the RNC. I don't know her name, but the female that sings with the Pentatonix, is just awesome. Sorry guys, probably not your style.

Song by Leonard Cohen. If you like the song, check out the versions by Jeff Buckley or KD Lang. There is a great performance by Lang on YouTube from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Agree Jim, Leonard Cohen's melody is one of the most beautiful ever composed and it has seemingly endless variations with versions for Easter, XMAS, Veterans, etc. I enjoy Leonard's original lyrics as well, even in his human brokenness he still cries out Hallelujah. I can identify with that....

I remember reading that the reason there are so many variations is that Cohen wrote between 15 and 80 verses for the song and when people record it, after the first verse they can just choose which verses they want to use. Cohen would change which verses he used when he performed the song. Other performers used different combinations of verses.

Musician John Cale said he asked Cohen for all the lyrics and Cohen faxed him 15 pages of lyrics. A post last year by the people who run Cohen's Facebook page says that all 80 verses have been found and are now at the University of Toronto.

The interesting thing about the lyric variations is that some of Cohen's lyrics for the song are pro-religion while others express doubts. So depending on the lyric choices, the song can have different meanings. It's also interesting that Cohen was Jewish and attended synagogue, but was also interested in Catholicism and was an ordained Buddhist monk. Ironically, when he was ordaine,d he took the name Jikan, which means silence.

That's probably more than you ever wanted to know, right?

Issued today by Leonard Cohen's Estate:

Following the repeated unauthorized use of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” during two performances at the Republican National Convention, representatives from Leonard Cohen’s Estate and Sony ATV Music Publishing issued the following statements:

Statement from Michelle L. Rice, Legal Representative of the Cohen Estate:

“We are surprised and dismayed that the RNC would proceed knowing that the Cohen Estate had specifically declined the RNC’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner “Hallelujah”, one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue. We are exploring our legal options.

Had the RNC requested another song, “You Want it Darker’, for which Leonard won a posthumous Grammy in 2017, we might have considered approval of that song."

Statement from Brian J. Monaco, President, Global Chief Marketing Officer, SONY/ATV Music Publishing:

“On the eve of the finale of the convention, representatives from the Republican National Committee contacted us regarding obtaining permission for a live performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. We declined their request.”

Actually, Halleluah is about sex, desire, rejection, love and loss. It is not about religion.
