G/SA low qualifier at Thunder Road
What is this combo? I wasn't even born in 1964.

Re: G/SA low qualifier at Thunder Road
There is a single 4 barrel 383/330/280 that seems to come close to fitting the class, looks like it might be a good combination.

426 originally 365 horsepower, NHRA rated at 291? And people complain about new cars?

There is lots of "soft" combos out there. Racers just need to be smart enough to recognize them! |
Re: G/SA low qualifier at Thunder Road
Looks like his cars are always well cared for and don't want for much either. I bet the same car with less than thoughtful testing an prep would be just another .4-.5 under car. It isn't like he bought it complete like the new cars. Going Mopar now 442?

Very well put Sean! There are plenty of fast old dodge combos just takes some keyboard surfing. However, it still takes some work it isn't always plug and play just because it's good on paper.

Biggggg differance between writing cars into classes or better yet, reading the class guide and taking advantage. It existed! Hats off to Jim and his guys.

Re: G/SA low qualifier at Thunder Road
All the 383 Dodge and Plymouth engines from 1963 to 1967 had an almost flat intake, 550 cfm afb carb, small exhaust valve heads, and a 430 lift cam. The factory rating horse power was to help in the showroom. Paul covered the 426 street wedge. Hats off to Jim Hale and John Shaul who found a way to make these combinations run very well. A lot of R&D. Not a fat wallet.

Re: G/SA low qualifier at Thunder Road
I wish NHRA would de-rate the Olds 400 engines. I haven't seen any in NHRA since Sam Murray's car in 2006. There are a number of old combinations that would be good to see out there but they were factory rated for showroom appeal and are too high for today's competition.
