FWD transmission longevity
 

I was thinking about and missing all the FWD stockers that ran back in the day. I love the "odd ball" combinations and loved watching a FWD Stocker put a rocketship on the trailer. I bought a couple of Horizons 20 years ago with intentions of building a FWD Stocker but when the kids hit college idea that got shot in the head. I know the automatics should have no problem with breakage but I always wondered which of the FWD cars had the strongest stick shift transmissions? I guess what would live behing the engine it was bolted to. The Escort seemed to be a terror. I know the Chrysler's made their mark and had to be strong with the turbo's. I'm not sure about the GM cars. I'm sure Mark Yacavone or Billy Nees would be able to chime in. There are many more that ran these cars that should have some input. I still remember heading to the U.S. Nationals 15 or 20 years ago and seeing a Dodge Horizon Stocker covered with decals on Crawfordsville Rd. with an open header. Just wondering and doing a little bench racing in my head. Thanks in advance for the replies. Don Jackson

The GM Muncie 282 was a pretty strong trans , we ran them with Chevy V6 and Olds Quad 4 engines with no problems .

The 5 speed manual trans in my 96 Escort has held up so far & I've got 3 spares but one is in my daily. I've got the car .75 under so far. :D

We never had problems with the 82 Escort 4 speed. We would get them out of the boneyard and just change the oil. I never the insides of one.
The newer 5 speed is supposedly not as strong, but maybe we'll find out some day.
The 5 speeds in the Cimarrons never gave us any trouble either. The shifters needed heavier, braced cables though.
It's hard to hook those cars up hard enough to break them. Of course you can't shift them like they had a Super Shifter or those ratchet things..whatever they're called, hooked to them.
I did see a little black 2.2 Rampage with the case split in half, years ago.
