33 or 35 spline 12 bolt axles?
We're checking out axle & spool kits for the Chevelle wagon. Which would be better in a lower-class SS car? Nothing 'trick' here...talking about a length maybe 2 inches shorter than stock.....PG trans and drum brakes. Best axle bearing.......maybe the Ford type? Any favorite mfgrs? What about lightening? Might try a 4-speed later in the car.....would I be better off with a Dana?

Take a look at moser they pay qualifying $$$ I think --Get a 9 inch ford 35 spline axles you will probably never ever break one---- a milllion different gear ratios ---get big ford or olds bearings same size and you can go nuts with all the lighting/scalloping/boring to the axles too----If you want to you can get a 12 bolt dropout center for the ford too----change ratios in 20-30 min with the ford instead of 1 1/2 -2 with the 12 bolt----just my opinion but unless you enjoy laying on your back busting your nuts to crush the sleeve on a 12 bolt I would do a ford--- Been there done that both ways will take the ford hands down---Comp 387

If you set up your second ring and pinion (correct shims, etc.) and use a solid bearing spacer (no crush sleeve), you can change the 12 bolt as fast as you can change the 9". And it will be cheaper to build the 12 bolt. The major downside I can see for your situation is that you are going to run a 283 and the ratios you will need (6.00+) are much stronger in the 9" or a Dana than in a 12 bolt.
