that makes sense kinda what I was thinking---No problem with heat or cold when the temp is adjusted it gets hot & cold--I never paid any attention to the pump before does it kinda vibrate a little while running ? or what--It definitely IS running just not sure if its making vacuum---any way to test it and how much vacuum is normal?? thanx for the reply

checked the hose nothing real apparent ---the pump was running while the engine was running ---how long is the pump supposed to run??---how much vacuum is this pump supposed to pull-- might just be a "worn out" pump hell its 15 years old-- just do not want to spend $45-60 bucks for a pump when its "only" a cracked leaking hose

The search I found stated the vacuum pump should produce 17-21" of vacuum. If the damper is in defrost is also a sign of not enough vacuum. A cheap hand operated vacuum pump will diagnose a bad hose or damper diaphragm, and could be used to show what the vacuum pump is pulling. What is the brake pedal like?

thanx guys--we are gonna replace the pump tonite with a known good pump see if that fixes it---all the hoses look pliable not rotted or chafed etc. Will let u know what it was--FED 387

Is the truck a 4x4? If it is and it has the electronic shift on the fly (esof) it probably has bad hub seals which allow dirt to enter the vacuum lines and wear out the pump. Like Sean said it should be at least 15" of vacuum. Hope this helps.

I just checked and the A/C compressor is also engaged in any position except off-- not matter which position the selector is in EXCEPT off the a/c compressor is running
