Dane Pearson had his 1966 SS/DM at Charlotte a few weeks ago, first time I have seen him out with it in 10 years or more...looks just like it did back then. 280 cid with a Liberty. I think I heard Wayne Allison may be bringing his back out too. I'm friends with Doyle, just talked with him last tbursday as I showed him the last issue of ND which had a nice feature article on Dane and his Corvette. Doyle still has his SS/DM Vette, I think it is set up as a GT for now but he will be back in SS/DM with a 5 speed eventually. I'm sure he will be in this thread before too long, lol.

Old car, but new photo. Robert Brinkman's SS/CM, taken at our race at Hagerstown MD November 2011. On Facebook, Lee Montgomery wrote: "That's the corvette that Jerry Coley and i raced back in the late 70's and early 80's. looks like Bob has taking good care of it."

Are you looking for photos of the cars, or looking to buy a car, or doing something about the history of these cars? There are a few Facebook pages with reference to these cars. Try these out, but if you want photos I have a file with a bunch taken from different places on the web

Hey vette1 and Mike,

Thanks for the PR.

Just FYI, if anyone is wanting to bring gas and modified back, count me in.
Not sure that was the question, but I'm sure there are many more like me.

If you're wanting any info or pictures let me know.

Remember the song by Justin Timberlake, "I'm bringing sexy back"
That would be modified eliminator.

Thanks again.

I'm so glad to see you posting Mr. Ebern...I hope you are feeling better! As for modifieds there's nothing better than the sound of a small block modified stick car making a single run, it's like music!

Anybody know what ever happened to the "Addict" D/MP Corvette. My Dad raced against it in the early '70s at Mason Dixon, 75-80 & York.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

The old vettes are still my favorites, and loved modified,I still love the sound of 10,000 plus small block w/ 40 lbs. flywheel,I wish cars still sounded like that.
There are several videos on you tube that I love to watch and listen to one from IHRA WCS series @ Branierd( spelling) @ Chatanooga Tn.
ANY of Mike Boyles Good ol Charlie Brown, I have'nt got to see in person for about 10 years does Good ol Charlie Brown still have the heavy wheel in it?

Back to Vette's I think when mention mod vettes you need to included, Ault&James car,
Larry Kopp's,Gene Fulton.

Way cool.
Today's cars are great, but drag racing of the '60s and '70s was better.

I remember Tim McDonald, Alan Marsh, Ronnie Trafenstedt, Joe Winblad and the Ault & James Vettes from the Springnationals in the 70's when I was a kid.

Thought I would treat the Corvette lovers here on CR wit a few photos...there's more where these came from if you want to see them?

Notice how tied down the front end travel is on these cars, especially the Turner car. That must have been a pretty hard landing

Been a long long time since I've seen folks watching Sportsman cars like they are here. Not even Indy was attended this well. I wonder if all these Corvettes came back, would the fans follow them!

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

When I first started going racing with my brother in 1981, IHRA Modified Production was in its heyday. As was mentioned earlier 40# flywheels, Dana 60's with 6.83 gears, 10,500+ and side step the clutch, and if the engine was bigger than 300c.i. it was unusual. One of the mega RPM cars I remember was mentioned earlier, Fred Whites vette. I remember looking at the old Moroso tack with the reset needle and it was always pushed past the numbers on the dial. The pits then was a corvette car show. Don Jackson

Growing up in Norwich, CT, the first really good race car I heard of was Kenny Adams' C/MP '57 Corvette. And my fiend Chester Houghtaling had a pretty fast '62 Vette in the early 80s.

These are my favorites as well. The throttle stops have certainly hurt racing, most kids just aren't into cars now either. It was a different time, my favorite was Tim Freemans Corvette.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

Boy, here is a thread that got my attention. Modified Production, if there is any plan to bring this back please hurry. Not to be repeatitious, but no drag car makes the sound of those high winding small blocks with the dana rear section, cut 4 speed transmissions and the tunnel rams. Those bigh flywheels kept those engines winding. As some one already said, put that thing on the floor and slip your foot off the clutch and you are on a ride. Kinston Dragway had a race every year that was advertised as Gas and Modified race. I can almost hear old Charlie Brown and Tommy Walker on WKIX Radio in Raleigh advertising that race a week before it happened. I saw this thread after spending a whole week-end in Drag Race History. I have some photos of old Modified Production cars and I will get busy tonight getting some scanned to post. Thanks for the thread.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

More Modified Corvettes for you folks. The sweetest cars in all of drag racing in my opinion....they're just good looking cars! Actually I think the 63-67 are the best, but the 56-62 are the next best....mine is coming along nicely

Thanks for the videos Josh.

I was fortunate enough to drive Bob Callham's D/G Corvette at the '73 Div II race at Phenix City and it was the most fun I ever had in a race car.

Jody, Gary Ballenger and I bought the "Addict" in the early 80s and converted it into SG with a BBC. Had it for 5-6 years and sold it to a guy who raced at Capitol, he sold it to a racer in Pa. and its still up there around York.
