66 chevy ll cage
If you were building a 66 chevy ll stocker, would you do just a 6 point roll bar or go ahead and do a 8-10 point cage. Would chromoly save enough weight to offset the expense?

Re: 66 chevy ll cage
I put a 10 point ms cage in my 12 second Mustang when I built it just because it allowed me to upgrade the car to a bigger engine package and more speed without ever having to retrofit a cage upgrade. Think about tearing the interior of that stocker apart in a few years. It's not pretty.

Go 10 point 1-5/8" chrome moly. It makes a nice rock solid stiff car, that you can count on.

Re: 66 chevy ll cage
go with full moly cage imo. remember on the chevy everything from the firewall forward just bolts on the car. they have structural rigidity of a marshmallow.

1.625" Chrome Moly is .083" wall is 1.367 # per foot The weigh savings comes from the fact that you are using a thinner wall material. However in this case the Chrome Moly cage will weigh 29.1% less than Mild Steel. Tom |
Re: 66 chevy ll cage
I usually use the 33% figure as a rule of thumb, since most cars done in the last 20 years have .134"wall ERW tube instead of .120 DOM
Average chrome moly roll cage weighs around the same as a .134" wall mild steel roll bar. The added safety from a cage in a car like a shoebox Nova is worth the price and even a few pounds. It's not just how fast you are going any more, you have to consider the 150+mph bullet on 9" tires in the other lane . |
Re: 66 chevy ll cage
Our Nova really benefited from a cage compared to when it had a moly bar in it. They are not the strongest cars. I believe there is a rule change in stock that might allow you to extend the bar past the firewall now. Worth checking it out.
