How old is ASRA?

ASRA may be older than I, at least, thought. I was digging through the archives (mess in the cellar), and I came across the 1978 New England Dragway Rule Book, which contained a class called All Star Eliminator. Eligible classes were all NHRA Stock, Super Stock, and Modified Eliminator classes, as well as the AHRA/NED Super Stock and Stock classes. BTW, in AHRA Stock, you were allowed an 850 cfm carb, aluminum intake, .525 lift cam (hydraulic engines had to stay hydraulic), any compression ratio, and you were classified by lbs./c.i.

There was no mention of All Star in the 1975 rule book, but there was an NHRA emblem on the cover of both rule books.

Re: How old is ASRA?

Greg - As near as I can figure, All Star was a combo of Comp, Mod, SS and STK that first started in 1976. There were no season points and the elimnator was only run on dates where a separate Comp/Mod Elim and SS/Stk Elim were not contested. (Comp/Mod and SS/Stk WERE regular points eliminators.) The original purpose of All Star was to allow class legal cars to go to national and divisional events and not lose out on their points at New England, while at the same time the local legal cars could still run. In 1978, the separate Comp/Mod and SS/Stk were done away with and All Star became a full fledged points eligible eliminator. In 1981, New England dropped the All Star name and went back to calling it SS/Stk Eliminator. In 1982, New England dropped having a class legal weekly eliminator altogether and Joel McMahon (and others) formed the All Star Association. So the name "All Star" goes back to '76 but the association goes back to '82.

(How did I do Mr. Barsamian?)
