Carb / Throttle body cleaner

I have a couple older throttle bodies I'm looking to freshen up .....someone told me that there is a chemical that carb builders use to dip the body in to restore it to a newer looking finish .... anyone ever hear of this or have any ideas of their own ...????

Joe, they are probably talking about the carb cleaner cans that allows you to dip the carbs for cleaning. They used to come in 1 gallon, 3 gallon and 5 gallon cans.

Due to EPA regulations, I have not seen the stuff for sale for a long time. Also, the cleaning solution has a strong odor and if you get it on your skin or hands, it takes forever to go away.

NAPA carries the product in one and five gallon containers. make sure you remove any electronics that are attached to the throttle body before dunking them in the solution.

Gunk made it years ago--came in a 5 gal pail with a handle strainer in it you only got 4 gal of product in the bucket then you added about a gallon of water to keep the stuff from evaporating--- it would clean the oldest scuzziest carbs you ever saw!!! Do to health and air contamination problems it was I think discontinued--FED 387

Joe, understand that the stuff mentioned here does not refinish the carb, it cleans it and if anything it removes some of the finish. You must be very careful not to leave anything in the chemical cleaner or you can do permanent damage. Jim

I think it was called Gunk Hydroseal or something similar, it worked great and you would wash everything off with water after the parts came out of the can.If you find any,be sure you use you use gloves and or don't go rootin' around in the can for small parts as your hands will not be happy Just checked, it is now called Hydroseal II .John Kissel

Joe the best i have found is by AC Delco X66A.i have used it for years.it comes in spray X66A or in a can X66P it also removes varnish from fuel tanks. and like jim says you don't want to soak a throttle body it will destroy it. use the X66A by spraying it on and let sit for a min.or two then use an old tooth brush to clean.you can buy it at any GM dealer or AC Delco store.

I think the only good stuff left is Berryman Professional Chem -Dip, part # 0905 comes in a 5 gallon pail for around $100, it smells like the old school stuff. O' Reillys sells it, they order it in. The Berryman cleaner in the gallon can is garbage. Maybe try walmart Super-Tech spray carb cleaner, that is really strong.

I use Berryman Chem. Dip. for my Q-jet carbs. This will clean your carbs or what ever you have nice. Use a parts cleaning brush after parts have soaked for a couple of hours. Just follow the instructions. Cost is around $28.00 to $30.00 per gal. (Buy 2gal). You can purchase @ Auto Zone. Note: Take electrical parts off units you are cleaning.

You may want to call Bob Oliver at Competition Carburetion. He went through my carb last year, and the one I sent him looked like crap, and came back looking like brand new. So if you are wanting a re-color Bob could help you.
