12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
I have a 68 Chevelle (original)12 bolt and the pinion seal leaks. New seal installed however there is a groove in the yoke. Does anyone have part # for a speedy sleeve or is it best to replace with aftermarket yoke? If so what brand and part # is the best??
Thanks in advance |
Re: 12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
My 12 bolt pinion seal was also leaking. Replaced the seal twice, still leaked. I found out that it was leaking around the OUTSIDE of the seal where it meets the housing. Housing was pitted pretty bad, so I ended up putting some RTV sealer around the outside of the seal before installing yet another new seal. That finally fixed the leak. You may want to look at that area on yours to eliminate that as the leaking area.

Re: 12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
Ive had trouble with a leaky pinion seal on 12 bolt. Finally I started putting a little rtv in pinion threads before I slid yoke on pinion. No more leaks.

Re: 12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
I use a Ratech #6109 seal or the equivalent Strange part number. It puts the seal at the correct position on the yoke, most other seals do not and a leak will be the result.

Re: 12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
Just use Ultra Grey in the well around the pinion nut. No leaks from the splines, and the nut will never ever move. no fuss...no muss...no leaks from the splines...no staking the pinion nut...and you can reuse the nut over and over. We are now on the 20th year on the nut, never a leak from the pinion splines, and never a loose pinion.
Warning!!! Don't expect to put Ultra Grey on and race immediately, you will have a mess. Let it set up over night before use. Also, it will take a few minutes to get the Ultra Grey off and remove the pinion nut. However, a wire wheel on a drill will clean the nut, washer, and yoke right up. |
Re: 12 Bolt Pinion seal leak
Adger thanks for the offer but the big block has the 1330 U-joints. I pulled the shaft and checked. We always use the ultra grey on the splines also. I am looking at the Dennys stuff right now.
Thanks for the info,as usual a wealth of knowledge here. |
