Thunder Valley Re-Joins NHRA
I saw on the NHRA division 5 page that Thunder Valley in South Dakota re-joined NHRA starting this year. Sounds like great news! Anybody think of a possibility of a National Open at that track in 2026? I have not been to that track since the early 2000's....

Grant, let's have a points meet and a National Open, THIS YEAR. I hate to date myself, but when I used to Race NHRA Points Meets there, they ran
T/F, F/C, Pro/S, etc. They would surly be able to handle T/S, T/D, Comp, S/S, Stock, S/C, S/G and S/ST. J.R> |

A National Open/ Divisional would be great as I'm only 90 miles from the track
But they still have the older metal guard rails. NHRA would require updated cement guard rails for those type of races. |
Re: Thunder Valley Re-Joins NHRA
I last raced there at a Points race I believe in 1992. It?s great to have a track in that part of the country, but it needs some updates to be safe.

The place was packed for that race. The track finally just opened the gates and let people in.
No one had any idea how many spectators were going to show. North grandstands were full! #5458 Curt Rees |
Re: Thunder Valley Re-Joins NHRA
Well if they do I sure hope no one shows up with hand controls to race it. I went the weekend of the MCR race (don't run stock no more but wanted to watch). The wife and I bought our tech cards and went through tech. I went to ask Glenn a question and the moment he seen me in the chair he started screaming that I and no one like me will go down his track And that he wanted me gone. To get a full refund on the way out. Zero discussion nothing. I couldn't even hang around to watch.
Just thought I would let you know what a supportive track they are. Me and that car have raced at Thunder Valley Dragway off and on since 1994 and as recently as the fall of 2023 with no issues. |
Re: Thunder Valley Re-Joins NHRA
Yeah, that?s awesome to hear! Thunder Valley was always a solid track back in the day. If they?ve rejoined NHRA, I wouldn?t be surprised if a National Open is on the table in a year or two, especially if they get good turnout at the divisional events this season. Worth keeping an eye on their schedule for 2026.
