Oil Filter Technology

I was just wondering how many folks get really picky about which oil filter they use ? I worked at a late model stock engine shop for a long time and the boss wanted filters that weren't overly restrictive as far as microns filtered. His thought was basically anything that filtered down to lets say 5 microns, would be too restrictive on oil flow. I'm curious to see what others say here.

Yes, they can be too restrictive. There's also the type of media used, and the design, as it relates to integrity. There have been problems with internal failures.

Look up Lake Speed Jr., he just did an oil filter article. He's pretty good.

I have been using system one for about 20 years. In my opinion best thing out there. Never use a cheap automotive filter on your race engine.

Mike, What micron rating do you use? Remote filter or canister?

I am not sure on the micron rating of the element. I do know when I pre-fill the filter it fills right up to the top without stopping with 30w oil. It is a canister filter that goes right where the original filter goes. Not remote.
They have several different filter elements with different micron ratings. I would guess mine is the least restrictive. good long lasting product. Very easy to clean and inspect.
