Smile Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra

My late friend Gene Collins raced a "Box Top" 69 non ram air (flat hood) 428 CJ Fairlane when new after he sold his 271 HP 66 Mustang. He ran in the 10.5 lb class which was H/SA at that time (F/SA today) against the 62 Dodge 383/343 HP wagons. With the 4.30 gears that came in it and everything else as Ford built it he ran 13.30's on OEM street tires. With headers and 7 inch tires he was in the high12.90 and 13.0 range. After we did the heads it ran 12.60's. We then put a 3000 stall 10 inch converter in along with a shift kit in the C-6 and a regrind stocker cam then ran under the record with 12.40's using the OEM stock short block The record at that time was 12.65 set by the "Behemouth" 62 Dodge wagon of Pratt and Burkett. He won enough to pay his bills when he was laid of at work racing at Capitol and Aquasco raceway back then. It was a great car.
