Sammy, your making me feel old. LOL
My first points race was the only one I remember at Oddessa Texas. Red told me to "Take that damn plastic line off the fuel pressure gauge!!" Told me next time he saw that car had better have a speedo cable in it. Also had me pull out of tech line, off to the side, and pull a valve cover so he could check the cylinder head casting number. Also felt the sides of my block for side motor mounts (1958 & later 283" blocks had them). I still had my blue 1956 9 pass station wagon then. He was rude, cussed a lot and scared the crap out of me. I thought "Man, tech-in is tough at these races!"
Found out later, at a race in Ft Smith AR, that two brothers from there I had been racing every two weeks with a same color blue 1955 wagon had been caught with a '59 283" engine. I told Red "I think you mis took me for the (forget their name) brothers from Ft Smith". "You found a late 283" in their blue 1955 wagon." He just said OK, but was a bit (Only a bit. LOL) more pleasant after that. I got to really like him after I got to know him. You didn't have to worry about the other cars not being right. He spent a lot more time talking to Jeanie than he did me. LOL
First time I tore down for a record, Carroll Caudle (who did my machine work for years) wanted to watch Red check the cam. Red ran him off. LOL
