I have had one in my trailer for more than 5 years.

You just need to purchase a sim card, mine is through T-Mobile. It's a prepaid card. Costs me about $100 per year.
When you call the number, it will text a map link to you to show where the vehicle is located. You can also program a geo-fence, and can connect to door contacts.
No monthly subscriptions.
