Not sure on how much the capacitor costs from MSD, I usually get mine from work or go to the local Electronics store or online from where ever is the lowest cost. It is just a standard 25000 uF (micro-farad) 12 volt or higher rated capacitor. Most are rated for around 20 VDC.
A capacitor has a function of opposing a change in voltage of whatever circuit it is installed. It also acts like a battery, holding a charge for a short time. And it also acts as a buffer for the car's MSD power if you are running an alternator (remember it opposes a change in voltage) that may every so often output a voltage spike due to the regulator being flaky or a loose connection on the charging wire.
Kind of cheap insurance as a filter of power. I have one on my MSD box and on my delay box.
