You used to get 5 points for setting a record, which you could earn up to 2x per year. Myron Piatek and I used to bounce records back and forth by a few hundredths to get points. (except the one time we found a bad intake gasket during teardown... I tagged the J/CM 1/4-mile record more than intended, even lifting early! LOL)
There were a few championships decided on record points. Eventually they did away with them.
