I understand it is not your original question, my thought, sure would make a good GT or Crate Motor project.

To answer your original question, to my knowledge a 57 is acceptable in stock with any of the original factory engine combinations. [as posted above]

Also, how cool with it be to run the 283 with 2 carbs. [a 283 - 283 horse was available in 57 with four speed. it used a low profile 2 x 4 intake]
