Default Need some input for a 2bbl problem

Hey guys Any help would be appreciated. I have a 318 2bbl that wouldnt go past 5000 in Pittsburgh. I went to my local track and went 8.65 shifting at 5400 5600 no problems the week before. Normally The car stops pulling at about 5800 in good air.
My first three passes in were ok 8.79 8.79 8.80 at AA of about 4000 70% humidity, temp 80 and baro 28.60 Then as the air gets worse the car started falling off 8.82 8.91.
Then the next day the air was about 4400 feet baro 28.40 and temp 86 .. The car would get to 5000 and act like it was floating the valves and layover then I would shift and it would start pulling again and went 9.05. Next pass same thing 9.12. Then 8.93 short shifting it at 4800.

So after all that rambling is it possible the bad air would be the cause of all my problems. The timing is at 30. Plugs perfect. I checked valves perfect. No loose grounds. Wires ok. I'm lost and new to this two barrel thing.
Thanks Sam

Yes, it could have been the air. Lean it out.

Agreed... even on Saturday, it sounded like it had a little dead spot in the middle of 1st gear, but sounded good down track. Sounded like it needed more gear & converter.

You can run a good bit more timing than that can't you? Always ran our 360 stuff around 36 degrees.

Yah.... I couldn't believe that the barometer dropped a tenth each day, like it wasn't bad enough! Some people were off a couple tenths from good air!

Thanks for responses.

Billy I will try it that but finding 4000 AA to test in will be a challenge lol.

Michael, I just went from a 3200 convertor to 4200 and run 4.56 with a 27 tire. In the quarter it runs out of gear at about 1200 ft and won't go past 6400. On sat it was breaking up but not like Sunday.

I checked that on sunday morning after the monsoon. Cap and rotor were in good shape but the wires have alot of miles on them, going to replace this week. I think Billy is right the more I think about it. Probably as simple as leaning it out

Question Re: Need some input for a 2bbl problem

What temp were you leaving at?

My 283 is a 10th slower at above 140 temp and feels like two slugs instead of its normal one....

I say Billy hit it ,the way the air was there 2bbl car definately would been rich with no changes, rich will not let car crank rpm ,plus converter could'nt flash as high as normal due to power down from air.
How much air hurts mid to higher class stocker, add more if you have 2bbl.,smaller the carb the worse it gets.
Danny
If water temp is that sensitive you may be a shade lean if that little water temp effects you that bad,as temp goes up engine leans more

You might also check fuel filters and fuel pressure.
