Re: Opel stockers & hudsons
Some guys out of a local Buick/Opal dealer that ran a Stage 1 Buick stocker tried running a new Opal at Miami/Hollywood Dragway in stock back in the real early 70s. Sorry I dont recall much about it but it had major driveline problems back when you had to run the factory trans & rearend. They didnt run it long. Im actually old enough to remember stocker Hudsons running and theres still some stout running ones at Bonneville, even repowered Opals too, the ones that look like mini Corvettes

The Opel looked good to be a U/S in 1969. The GT was rated at 102 HP and had a shipping weight of 2041 lbs. But as was mentioned, the tranny was terrible and it had a very small one-barrel Solex. I had a shop teacher in high school that loved them, but because Buick only imported the Kadett and GT, we didn't get the really good stuff! Lew

Re: Opel stockers & hudsons
My dad had an 1968 Opel Station Wagon he raced it from new until about 76 or 77. He raced it for awhile with the Lil School Bus on the side because my mom was a school teacher and drove it to work. He then painted it red and called it Art's Little Red Wagon. He ran z/s with it until around 76 when the HP was refactored to T/S could'nt run index so he went bracket racing then. In those days local tracks ran stock 3 times a week. Daddy won lots of races in those days. He also won a IHRA national with the car in the ealry 70's and r/u a NHRA race in Warner Robbins Ga with the car.
The Transmissions were junk we carried a spare eveywhere we went and could change them in between rds. He had wholes cut in the floor boor to reach the bolts and the Opel GT trannys were better. That little opel is what gave me the desire to race Stock eliminator. Chip Johnson |

Re: Opel stockers & hudsons
My high-school auto mechanics teacher had a summer Opel, the 2 door Record and a winter Opel, the 2 door 'wagon (more room for sand-bags for better traction). Part of our "program of instruction" was changing the one good motor he had twice a year!
