As far as shift timers you have to be careful staging with shift timers. If stage and your flickers and have to push the button again you have to remember to put the shifter back in 1st gear, or the brake won't hold. If you shift on rpm you won't have that problem. The trans will shift when you get to the correct rpm (no guessing) I'm sure shifting on time is the preferred method. I personally prefer the rpm method and no problems staging. How ever I am old and slow and would forget to put the shifter back in 1st gear when restaging. You could ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. Comming off the stop in a higher gear is suppose to make the car more consistent and also spends less time on the stop therefore more MPH. 1 staging problem rolling the beams cause the trans in 2nd gear might make you change your mind LOL

What I just described to you happened 1st round at Stanton. The guy I ran 1st round flickered the blttom bulb, got off the button to stage an inch deeper and when he put his finger on the button it had shifted to 2nd gear and the trans brake didn't work in 2nd gear. He rolled the beam and I got a free pass to 2nd round.
