Don't remember if it was really a timed, air shifted deal or what but I do remember they outlawed it the next year.

Yes! Remember seeing it at the 86 Keystones (he won). I think it was electric solenoids that did the shifting.

I remember a Diamond P in car camera of that car. Both hands on the wheel. And I think you are correct about the timed shifts. Similiar to the clutch timers in the funny cars now.
