Default Re: My 67 El Camino

I decided I was going to work on the El Camino this weekend. I have had a 68 230 out of a Nova and thought I would put it in so I can get to the track before it closes for the winter. I put on a Hays 30 lb. flywheel, a new Ram clutch and a stock bellhousing. Billy Nees has loaned me a Doug Nash 4 speed, but I decided to put the motor in without the trans for now. My next door neighbor has a lift and a transmission jack so we will put the trans in from underneath.

It was a frustrating weekend for me - I got the trans in to find the bolt holes in the mount miss the slots in the crossmember. Then when I tried the headers they hit the motor mount. I have 4 different sets of headers, and they ALL hit! I'm going to make my own mounts to move everything back about 5/8" and that will clear the headers.

Don't give up on this one...I would love to see it go down the track. I sure do miss my '65.

Me? Give up? Ain't gonna happen. Just been busy trying to make some money.
Besides, I wouldn't want to listen to Billy Nees if I never finished it.

Any new progress?? I like the SUPERMAX mill in the background. YCM made a good import in the 80's What year is it, around 1982?? I think I have some 3.73 for a 12-bolt if needed. -Mark

I've been playing with the motor mounts. I had some truck mounts I tried mating with small block urethane pads to the small block frame mounts. Motor was too far forward. I bought a set of stock 6 cylinder mounts, motor was too far back and hit the firewall. I guess I'm going to have to make my own mounts. On the positive side, I did order a headliner from OPG at their holiday sale price.

Back in November I bought a set of Torq Thrust wheels, 2 14 x6 and 2 14 x 7. I had tires put on the 14 x 6 for the front, stopped at Summit a couple of weeks ago and picked up the correct lug nuts.

I still have it, just haven't had much time or any money to spend on it. I'll get back to it this spring.
