I drilled a series of small (.250") holes around the original bell housing from the inside, as close to the pump as I could get. Then, on the outside of the bell, I drew a line, connecting the holes for a cutting guide. The instructions give you a measurement from the mounting surface of the bell to your cut. Your guide line (holes) should be close to that measurement... I finished off my cut edge with a hand held belt sander, and some 80 grit..
I just masked off any openings in the trans and did my complete install with the trans together..

I have done several. Best off to measure back and make a rough cut short of the cut line. Then you can see exactly what you are doing. I used a 4 inch grinder with a cut off wheel to make the final cut. Then cleaned it up with a flapper wheel on the grinder. Take your time and measure twice. Double check to make sure the new bell is perfectly flush with the pump and is not touching the case anywhere. I have had real good luck on my powerglides.
