Factory tires and suspension matter a lot too. My 2004 Ram diesel 2500 towed my 3800 lb. empty, about 8000 lb. loaded 24' box trailer fine. My 2013 Ram 3500 SRW does even better with the 7000 lb. rear axle and 3640 lb. rated 275-70-18 tires.
