Well, I've got a nice 2 dr hard top sitting in my shop that never gets driven. It's a bell air with an inline 6, 3 on the tree over drive & 4.10 gears.
I love the car, but never get a chance to use it.
thought I'd make it into a stocker??
That way I WILL do something with it!
Thanks for all the info!!
I need to see what the powers at be have to say....

I learn so much from youse guys. This post was interesting as I have thought seriously about a lower class Stock class car for awhile. I wasn't aware that the 55-57s could still be run. I have a 57 more-door belaire setting in the garage. 283 -power pack ,powerglide. If in fact the car could run with a metric trans, would the four door allow me some advantage -jumping class ,ect?
Can someone tell me what the car would have to run for the NHRA index?
Did i mention ,I really like this car ,but i seem to ignore it way too much.
Thanks

Looks like not much weight difference with a 4dr.

Look it up here:

OK I'm just a Ford guy asking this. A 57 has the motor mounts @ the very front of the block and, if I remember right, a mount on each side of the bell housing. Then the trans just hung from there. @ least this is how a 57 Pontiac is, (I had 1). My question is this; how, under Stock rules are you going to put a Metric trans in that ?

David, The aluminum PG has been a super-ceded replacement for the cast iron one for a long time. Of course, it has a rear mount, same as a T200. So yes , you can use a rear cross member to hold it up.
The front mounts are far enough apart to hold it in place. Not exactly the same as the early Corvette, but similar.
You could add a torque strap , and I believe it would be fine.
The early Pontiac was a bit different. It was a horseshoe deal with a center pad.
That wouldn't work without bell housing or side mounts.

So I assume I would not be allowed to install a crossmember, but would need to fabricate a side mount setup.?
