Seriously, that was one fortunate incident,if one of these could be called that.He just missed the finish line grandstands, going around the end of it, since the scoreboard is way lower than the top of the grandstand, and he could have been trapped under the grandstand if he would have not gotten around the south end of it. That part of the track is under the landing approach of Brackett Field. Just be glad it wasn't Thursday a week early. Imagine the headline "Sportsman Qualifying Cancelled due to Plane Crash".

The gimli Manitoba crash was because they filled the aircraft in litres instead of gallons. This was during the switch over to metric and should of been picked up when the pilot did the drip test but he didn't do one. Long story short, he ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing on the only strip of pavement he could find.
More proof that drag strips save lives ! LOL! |

Thousands of landings for decades over the same flight path and the stands are no longer there BTW. Yeah, I'm glad he survived as well. Huh. Now------------, your history memory should note that the FAA actuality forced the scoreboards to be lowered some years ago as well. OMG, they knew this would happen ????

The 2011 crash was east of the pits at the horse oval beside them. The latest guy is pretty lucky to get out, plane looked mangled.
The Gimli crash was during a road race, they used the drag strip as the main straight and cars were lined up to start the race when it came in. Lots of witnesses! The pilot was familiar with the WW2 airbases and knew where he could find a place to land rather a visual sighting of it first. Google "Gimli Glider" and there are several stories of that. Probably the wildest recent one was in Iceland during a drag race... Last edited by Tom P; 11-23-2015 at 03:40 PM. |
