Calling a Firebird a 1998 means you get the newer front end look without having to use the LS1 engine. It is a popular combination for SS/HA and SS/IA.

If you like that front end better, you can have it claiming 1998. Since the LS1 engine that actually came in a 1998, is aluminum, the '98 shipping weight might be a little lighter, could be a plus for higher classes. I never checked on that.
