I am looking to put one of theses vacuum pumps on my Nova, does anyone have any pictures of how they mounted the pump and overflow tank on theirs cars? Just looking for some ideas and mounting options.

A defective vane would have come apart during initial factory testing. We test all new pumps at approximately 200% of a typical drag race duty cycle application, its one of the reasons we do it. If a vacuum pump vane does break its almost always due to something getting into the pump, other than liquid or air, that does not belong in there. The most common culprit we find is a piece of valve spring material. The foreign object breaks the first vane then these broken pieces break the remaining vanes. Its a domino effect. All vacuum pumps are vulnerable to this situation.
An appropriate filter between the engine and the pump would completely eliminate this possibility. You use an oil filter and air cleaner to protect your engine, why not do the same for your vacuum pump? If a needle bearing from a broken rocker arm locks up your oil pump is it the oil pumps fault? Certainly not! Remember, you don't get filet mignon for the price of chicken. And if everyone bought strictly on price we would all be driving Yugos, and they would still be in business. We put a Star pmp on Al Ackerman's F/D about three years ago........ I remember it working well and being worth about .12....... Hmmm.... wonder why we never put one on the L/AA when I was driving it...... go figure......
Anyway...... Star puts out a fine product and there is almost always a rep at the D1 races....... I'll probably have one on my car before the '09 season starts....... |

Star makes a very nice piece. I have used Aerospace as well and my only complaint with them is they are not hard anodized on the inside and do wear a bit with use. I am currently using a Moroso enhanced 4 vane on my 1050hp 520" B1.
As for a picture here is mine. It is a bit hard to see but it is there under/next to the filter. ![]() |
