Re: Best 4-Speed SS Of All Time?
Here's what Bill Jenkins wrote about Dave Strickler in my 1969 Camaro fact book in the chapter that I wrote about D. Strickler.
"When it came to driving a 4-speed manual transmission, no one to this day has been any quicker or smoother." Bill Jenkins, 1993. Here are the Strickler stats: 16 national class championships, 41 national and world records, and a world championship title......... To compare 4-speed drivers of today verses the 1960's and 70's. It's apples and oranges. There is no comparison. 4-speeds are easy to drive by today's standards, and dependable. Much more multitasking and work took place back in the 1960's and '70's. And there was much more natural ability needed for the great drivers. For one, drivers had to watch the tree and tach at the same time. Today you don't! The transmissions back then were not nearly as easy to shift or dependable as what we have today. Hand and foot coordination was much more in play back then too. No one uses a clutch during the gear changes now.........had to back then! Put one of the current 4-speed drivers in one of these old cars with old technology and no 2-step and see how well they would do....... So, when someone states that a driver of today is one of the best, you really need to DO your homework and research on issues like this. Ronnie Sox and Dave Strickler were two of the best in the business........hands down. Jerry, #1710, D/S |

[QUOTE=mopar68;216790]Ronnie Sox was to banging gears what Jimi Hendrix was to guitar playing; in fact, both of them were doing their thing during the same time period. Yes, there are/were other great 4-speed drivers but there was only one Ronnie (and Jimi).
I would also throw Chet Atkins in there for the guitar playing arena...............he was considered by many the greatest guitarist of all time.......... Jerry |
