Trend or PPP tool steel lifters. Need DLC coating if using on a steel core cam.

Re: Flat tapper lifter Stock Eliminator?
R.J., on a cast cam, I've had excellent luck with the Trend tool steel lifters. They offer a reduced diameter pushrod cup oil hole option to control upstairs oil, if desired. They can also be recrowned and repolished several times for a very reasonable fee. Good products, great service and very timely delivery and turn around time.
Non coated on a cast cam (nitrided or not). For a 8620 or steel billet cam, the PPPC brand DLC coated are great. Hope this helps. -Al

Re: Flat tapper lifter Stock Eliminator?
Appreciate the info, this would be on a cast cam.
I had a bad experience the last time I put an FE stocker motor together, I was using a cast cam and Trend Tool steel hyd short travel lifters and was breaking in motor on my test stand, thought I had broken motor in correctly. I noticed above normal “metal” trash during filter inspections and decided to look at internals. Found lifters going away and several lobes in bad shape. After talking to cam manufacture (independent) and Trend I believe camshaft was not heat treated correctly. But it bothers me not nothing the reason for failure. Both parties naturally denied being at fault, but lean towards improper heat treatment on cam. Still trying to learn. Again, I appreciate your info. Anybody notice any performance increase running solid lifter vs short travel hyd lifter?? Do the big cam co’s still offer optional camshaft treatments/coatings on cast cams and is it worthwhile?? Thanks RJ |

It is not the first time the cam company you are using has experienced issues with the heat treatment of their camshafts. Heard the same issues from others. Also, as Glenn stated, the break in spring pressure has to be lower than the spring pressure you use for racing. I would pay the additional cost and use a steel core in lieu of a cast core. Yes, there is a difference in power between the solid lifters and the limited travel lifters and it shows in the Spintron. |

Re: Flat tapper lifter Stock Eliminator?
We saw absolutely NO improvement on changing to solids
from low travel Hyd. Lifters in my Stockers on the Track. I still use Smith/Schubeck time bombs in my stockers. MY son runs the Trend solids in his Demon 340 Stocker. I am looking for more to buy.

Re: Flat tapper lifter Stock Eliminator?
On my Stocker I run 200/400 for spring pressure and have used the Trend tool steel lifters without breaking in with old oem springs and had no issue before.
Now I had a bad experience and don’t need another lesson ... I ordered set of lifters from PPP today to use on a cast cam so I will install some lite springs and change to my beehives after run in stand session. I never had an issue with schubecks/smith style lifters, but still hear horror stories of bad experiences. Appreciate all the info Thanks RJ |
