Re: How important is qualifying in Stock and Super Stock
I looked at 11 lodrs races in April/May 2019 for S/SS. 9 0f 22 spots in the finals are top 10. Thats 40.9%

Re: How important is qualifying in Stock and Super Stock
The argument could be made that the attitude and dedication of the individuals have a lot to do with overall performance, including having a fast car (qualifying) and driving well (final rounds). I doubt if the qualifying position alone would have much to do with driving well enough to make it to the finals.

If you qualify 1/2/3 you have a good shot at a bye along the way
thru eliminations

Re: How important is qualifying in Stock and Super Stock
I agree with the qualifying 1,2 or 3 for getting a bye at some point but this can be taken further. Qualifying in the middle of the field can give you a shot at a top qualifier and taking their position for a possible bye. Alternately you might get one of the last qualifiers. In my day there were always a few who had difficulty running the index and usually those were easier wins.
Qualifying positions are one of the ways our classes are unique and different from ET racing. If you are a top qualifier, you have earned the respect of the other racers and maybe a bye from your hard work to be a top qualifier. Similarly if you can take out a top qualifier you have earned it that way too. Many times a bye run is viewed as a 'freebie' and it was nothing of the sort, we can earn that bye run. Few others can do that. Qualifying positions are important more times than many would think. |
