I'm a new member on this site, Belvidere487z.
Much respect to the "old school" street runners, and class racers.
I have learned a lot from you all. Thanks for your inspiration and infleuences, which is "all good"!
Art, heard about Ray. My VERY late condolences, man. God bless him. You guys were a force to be reckoned with
on or off track (street)!! BIG respect to you BOTH!
I hope that I can be just as helpful as you all were to me in my earlier years.
Take care and keep the ET's low (strip)/don't smoke the tires off the line (street).
Later guys and gals!

Artie, was that "tanking" really acid-dipping? (Don't mean to ask a dumb
question) 2900 lbs is definitely feasible, considering what you started out with. Your power to weight factor was pretty good!!

Now that one has no turn around so you meet on down the road in warehouse district. conduit turn around was easy, use rockaway or springfield blvds.
That's the eastbound leg of the Nassau Expressway. They continued it past the ex-turnoff to the northbound side of the Van Wyck I-678, into the existing Rockaway Blvd merge. It is a GOOD surface, better than the 150th/conduit site. However, pulling runs off may be a little tricky, if the noise and crowd factors are TOO great. A little easier to do, than at Conduit/150th. You don't have to worry about the side roads, hotel traffic past 150th shooting across to the highway entrance. That would
be the makings of a BAD twilight run for ya!!

The Airport Diner is GONE. A couple of businesses rose and fell at that site, including a car rental place. The only thing, that I know of that has not really changed is the school at 130th/conduit, eastbound side? (It has been a few years), and they built a huge gas station (multi stalls) on the
westbound side of the Conduit. Some modernization on the homes toward Ozone Park, basically the area has changed somewhat.

Here's a picture of Ray (and Kevin Schmidt) during happier times at the York US 30 National Open race in 1979.

Not trying to change the subject but does anybody here remember a yellow '55 Chevy named "Family Affair?" NOT a street racer but a Jr. Stocker that ran out of the NYC area...possibly Brooklyn? with the usual stuff...Forgedtrues, Stahls, and Jarrell trans...early '70's time frame?

I was at that York '79 meet but all I remember is almost getting run over by Ed Racis in his Nova while he was making the call for Eliminations, LOL!!!!

Other cars that may have been raced on the street during the early-mid-'70s: Levi Holmes purchased Bill Blanding's 1969 "MiMi" Camaro, Tab Talmadge purchased Dyno Don's 1965 A/FX 427 SOHC Mustang, James & Will Smallwood purchased two ex-Sox & Martin cars (were they just "shop" cars, built and sold by S&M, I wonder?) which were a 1969 "Notchback" car and a '72 Barracuda, Willie "Cam Rod" (sp?) Campbell purchased Hubert Platt's (Platt & Yates) '70 Maverick, "Fast Earl" Mitchell's '69 Camaro was possibly owned by Wally Booth before he purchased it (the engine was at least Booth-Arons-built).
I had a long -time friend that was very close to Earl..and yes that was Booth's car..I was in Paterson the day the hauler showed up with it. That car had some history. And prol kept Booth in "green"..long after the fact..better than when he campaigned it.!
