Talk to John Presing. He was very fast with his build (and pretty much every build), and knows how to make the car run.

You don't need an MSD box at this point. It won't make your car faster.

You need gears and a Tweecer or Moates board with a program like Binary Editor to make tuning changes. You will make a huge improvement in ET with 5:13's and the ability to tune your engine.

There's been a guy trying to sell a set of (albeit) used 5.14's on The Corral. In the drivetrain parts section. Not me, or anybody I know.

I did talked with John about two weeks ago and your rite he's the best.
The reason for the msd is all I have is the stock teck , I want to get some experance in comp. I need a good tack and shift light. You need a msd box for most to work.
Why do I read 5.13s and sometime 5.14s on some of the post? I have a 8.8 ..

Looks like 5:14 from Motive and 5:13 from Precision and Yukon. It doesn't matter. You can buy them new for $200, or get them used for cheaper if they are in good shape (no cracked, chipped or bent teeth, not noisy, etc).

You will need to get into that computer to at least change the rev limiter when you get gears. You'll peg the limiter before you reach the stripe. The sooner that you get used to changing program parameters the better.

I would listen to everything that John says. He'll get you fast in a hurry, and won't make you empty your bank account getting there.

Motive sells a lightened set, that is the way to go. Also I would stay away from a used set of 5.13/5.14 they are prone to stress fracture. No one makes a pro version for the 8.8, so these are street gears and are not a soft material like the pro gears. As for an ignition module, an MSD digital 6 has worked well for me. The rotary settings for the rev limiter and 2 step are the way to go. This is just my take, but a good shift light that displays engine RPM is all you need. Spend the money on one that has multiple shift points and be done. The autometer programmable shift light works well, but the mount is a POS.

On my own Mustang, I have found the 4.88 gears for a 8.8 to be much more durable than the 5.14s. My car is a stick, and I have broken 2 sets of 5.14s, 60 footing in the low 1.6s
By comparision, my current 4.88s spent the first few years of running Stock with a non Soft Lok clutch, and have been back in the car for the past 2 years (after the last 5.14 set broke) And the past 1 1/2 years I have had my bracket engine in the car (mid 10s at 128mph, 1.37 60 foot best, dumping the clutch as high as 6600 RPM), and the last time the cover was off, the gears still looked great. So you may want to look at 4.88s with a shorter tire.Too bad there are no Pro gears available for the 8.8. That said, I doubt an automatic car would hurt the 5.14s in a Stocker.
