If it's a Bracket car , a more economical alternative to the Pro Trans would be a TH350 with a Coan trans brake valve body.
I've built many of these , and with the addition of the TH400 int sprag they are very durable. ....I have some Bracket racers who go 250 runs or more between freshen ups.
Defiantly not as quick as the Pro Trans and no clean neutral, but way less expensive .

Tom,

SS GT/TB with 327, the 585 Holley combo. A $5,500.00 plus trans is not in my budget for the initial construction so most likely I will begin with a powerglide w/brake. [I have plenty of powerglide parts]

good choice using the powerglide to set up a new car. I am still using a powerglide in my car but am going to try a 350 turbo soon to see how the car likes it.

The TH350 ,if the stock 2.48 first gear suits your combo, can be built with an aluminum drum ,TH 400 int sprag , trans brake valvebody for less than half the cost of the Pro Trans.
I would venture a guess that the performance advantage of the Pro Trans over the TH35 would be about .080-.120 second. depending on the ratios used.
