Re: 1964 S/SA National Record Setter with a Hemi
It is believed that the Ramchargers race team or perhaps Dick Landy received the first built 1964 Race-Hemi Dodge 330 from of the factory, can anyone here confirm this.

Al Eckstrand had a light weight Hemi Dodge at Detroit Dragway in the early Spring of 1964. He was probably testing an early prototype. Al had the inside track on the latest and greatest Mopar race equipment. As a Chrysler employee (attorney) and close friend of Byron Nichols (president of Dodge division), Al always had the first of the best race equipment.

Landy had the first one (S/S version) on the west coast.

This is for the East Coast Boys.
Bobby Harrop raced a Max Wedge Dodge and was given an A990 car and a altered wheelbase car buy I never remember seeing him in a '64 Alum. Hemi car. Anybody? JimR

I believe your correct. Bob ended up with a 2nd altered wheelbase car later (the RamChargers car) after he wrecked his. If I remember right he went over the guard rail at Cecil County with his original car at about half track. Is this correct.....anyone.

P.S. The RamChargers car that Bob Harrop ended up with also had been wrecked also but not as bad. It was slid on its side and some pictures are around someplace in my old magazines with some of the striped paint and an all white door and quarter pannel without lettering showing on it, These cars were really a hand full when running nitro instead of gas on 10 inch tires.

Re: 1964 S/SA National Record Setter with a Hemi
Car prices back then,
Bud Faubel sold his car at the end of the 1964 drag race season for $3500. With a guarantee that it could run right on the S/SA record of 11.47 |
