Unhappy Re: Jere Stahl in hospice

I still have a set of headers he built for me over 25 years ago for my SS car when we both were young men. Still not a speck of rust even though they were just VHT painted. We spent hours on the phone and he couldn't have been nicer or more informative. Jim

All of us who come from the early years of drag racing know that Stahl headers were the ones you always wanted, whether you could afford them or not. Sure, you used Hookers, which weren't a bad header in their own right, but the absolute, no-questions-asked best header in the world was Stahl. To illustrate, those of you who know your Chevy history know that the headers that were shipped in the trunk of first-gen Z/28s that had been ordered with "factory" headers were Stahl. GM could have anybody's product and they went with the best. That is Jere's legacy. He was the best.

From Dickie Olges
In 1968 my partner and I spent 2 weeks with Stahl & Jenkins setting our new 1968 Z-28 Camaro for E-stock. We would spend the day at Jenkins shop and night with Jere , Jenkins was building the engine for the car Stahl was building the headers and traction system. In the 2 weeks I learned more than any one should be able to learn. After that 2 weeks with Stahl & Jenkins they took this dum midwest drag racer under their wing from that point on we never looked back. Jere was with out a doubta person who was way ahead of his time. Sure hope he can make it.

He had a big sign saying "Plymouth" under the front bumper of his 1966. I guess back then people thought it was an advertisement, and did not realize he was running a spoiler! Very smart, capable racer, a true legend.

I'm saddened to hear this but I'm not surprised as life has a way of taking us all.

I had the good fortune to work closely with Jere on a Pro Stock R&D project back in the 90s. Without a doubt, it was the most challenging thing I've had to do.

Jere is a person who could make my brain hurt. He was so extremely intelligent that it was a challenge to keep up with what he was saying. He'd make a comment which was so revolutionary that it could take weeks or months to think about and then say another one just as startling a few seconds later.

Though we did have our issues towards the end (as happens often with sincere differences of opinion) I thank him for the incredible insight he gave me into increasing performance on almost every area of a race car.
