Gary Kupfer of 'Ultra Automation' was the Local Brush who lettered many of the Race Cars out on Long Island.

Including, most if not all of Motion Performance's Cars.

Maybe he lettered the Manhattan Speed Parts {Shop} LO23 Dart. ??

Mitchell's VW gassers were anything but traditional, but they set numerous National Records in

Exclusive interview with Motion Minicar Performance's Bill Mitchell

After nearly 40 years since he raced a VW, Bill Mitchell sits down and talks about the '70s.
December 18, 2013

The last time Bill Mitchell raced a VW-powered gasser was almost 40 years ago today.
Many have tried to get him to sit down and talk about those days behind the wheel of the
Thunder Bug, but until this month, no one had been successful. That is why you need to
check out the March 2014 issue of Hot VWs magazine, as we will publish the first
interview with Bill Mitchell talking about Volkswagen racecars. Who actually ran the first
10-second pass? How did he built those radical cars? And where did all those fast
VWs end up? All this and more will be in this issue.

Bill Mitchell today, living in Daytona Beach, Florida, driving
a '33 Ford 3-window coupe and loving it!

Manhattan Speed Parts/Shop Dart was lettered? Oh, I get it, if it was lettered most likely it was lettered by Gary, "The Local Brush."

"Gary, met Joel Rosen, the owner of Motion Performance in 1966. Immediately after started lettering all of the race cars. He was 19 years old & still in art school.

In 1968 Gary opened his own custom auto body & sign shop, "Ultra Automation." Joel then sent all of the Motion cars to Gary for body modifications & paint. Gary put the creative Motion stripes on the Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles & Vegas. Soon after we started modifying the Corvette bodies, flared wheel wells, hood scoops, & spoilers for Motion, which Joel named the "Phrase III GT."

The MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN ...

was hand painted with a brush, by Gary, directly onto the rough cement facade of the building on Sunrise Highway, in Baldwin NY. The sign was approximately 5 feet high by 40 feet long. Gary was on a ladder for about 2 weeks completing this huge task."

Question: How was the brake pedal-to-master cylinder pushrod offset in order to remain in line with the offset master cylinder? I've wondered about that for the longest time. In the countless magazine articles, forum posts, etc. that I've read, it was never mentioned how this was accomplished.

In late 1968,

The Dart was lettered with 'Manhattan Speed Shop' on the front fender when it raced at Englishtown in October 1968.

Duhhh! Thanks. It's been a very long while since I've been under the dashboard of a supercar era Mopar.

Thanks, Paul. Someone has to have photo(s) of it. If memory serves me correct, Sal Marino was the track photographer at Madison Township Raceway Park back then. Perhaps The Local Brush lettered the car? Doesn't hurt to try and contact him.

I did some checking...

http://www.draglist.com/draglist/sea...+Thums&page=69

and yes, indeed, Sal Marino was the track photographer at Raceway Park back then. He was from Staten Island. A few years ago I tried to get the late Bob Plumer to contact him, you know, one professional photographer to another, in an attempt to get him to share his archives (if he still had his negatives and/or slides) with our Yahoo StockSSDragRacing group. I don't believe Bob Plumer was able to make any contact. I forget the name of his photography business but that's how I was able to give the info to Bob.
