Questions about gears?
Just moved and tracks near me are all 1/8th mile. I have a bracket car and was thinking about either putting a low 1st gear in my C4 or putting more gear in the car. Wondering if one is better than the other.

Gear the rear end down.

Re: Questions about gears?
If your just bracket racing, what does it matter? Don't have to be as fast as possible, right?
Just racing that shoe polish number. If you decide to go off and try to run a 1/4 mile event someplace, you will just have to change it back. I would leave it alone. I wouldn't change mine to run 1/8th mile.

Re: Questions about gears?
I don't change mine for 1/8 mile racing either. We super stock guys run a pretty low gear ratio anyway. If you have a real high gear ratio a lower one will help most of the time but might not be worth the time and effort to change it

Re: Questions about gears?
If he isn't geared low for 1/4 mile, he should address that. It would make his car more consistent, especially in bad air. Changing gears for different length tracks is a waste, just my thoughts.

Re: Questions about gears?
that is the main reason I was thinking about changing, was told car would be more consistent. I run a 4.11 and probably could have used a 4.33 in the 1/4. so I was thinking of going to a 4.56 or maybe even a 4.71 since it will be only 1/8th mile from now one.

I wouldn't change gears either.
I run a 5.67 gear , 31x13 tire w/ 2.98 low in a 5 speed. 5.90s-6.0s in the eighth......9.40s-9.50s in the quarter. |

Re: Questions about gears?
If a big money 1/4 mile race comes up, you would have to change gears if you gear it too low for 1/4 mile. Why paint yourself into a corner like that?

Re: Questions about gears?
When I raced out of Jimmy's shop in Nashville, we ran Music City (1/8 mile flat out) on Saturday Night and Bowling Green (1/4 mile) on Sunday. Mike Lynch in SS/L never went to Bowling Green. I knew that in SS/L we ran a 1.07 high gear so I asked Jimmy if those guy passed on Bowling Green because they had too much rear end gear. He just grinned.
