Is there a history of bad fires and accidents at the Winternationals that has brought this on?

Not to my knowledge. I think its just another fine example of California being California. If something can be regulated and there is some spare change to be made in doing so, they will. If you can over-regulate it, even better. That state, along with a few others, (NY, NJ, MD, IL, MI ) are so far removed from principles the founding fathers intended its downright heartbreaking. And the newer generations are largely oblivious and numb to it.

But back on point, to your point Chris, I'd like to pose that question to LACFD. I do know that history has had its share of horrific Circus tent fires, with massive loss of life, albeit none in the past half century, likely because of the venues being done in arenas now, and far less tents in the first place. So the code may have its origins in that. But a massive circus tent, or other large tent which houses thousands of spectators who have limited egress is wildly different than a trailer canopy with a race car under it. This is where the split always lies between good intentions, and the insatiable desire of overly zealous two bit low life bureaucrats. And the Good Lord knows, there are plenty of those who rest their heads at night in CA.

If I read this rule correctly, you can't park your car under your trailer canopy (>400 ft^2). This means every TF, FC, and PS car will not be able to use their canopies.
You can bet that every pro team will have thier canopies out with no issues.

No, it's just the usual politician thieves skimming the action. Which is why they like drag racing now, because they drove all the other lucrative business out of state.
